Puppy Gates

Maggie's coming home in two weeks and I need two 6' puppy gates. Any suggestions? I have her crate and other things set up but I'm still trying to figure out what kind of puppy gates to get....I'd like to avoid paying hundreds of dollars for something I'll need for only 6 months....

PS is it okay if the room is 7 x 12....the breeder suggested 6x8 and that's the reason for the 2nd gate....The room I chose is our sun room because not only do we spend a lot of time in it as a family but it also leads to the back door so we can lead her outside to pottie.

Thanks for any help.

While they aren't cheap, I have to say I LOVE the Bindaboo gate we used when Kodi was younger. It is a spring tension gate that has a step-through people gate in the middle. This might not seem like a big deal, but it gets REALLY old stepping over gates all the time.

And it really isn't just a few months for many people. Even though they may be more and more trustworthy about pottying, you may still find that they need to be confined to prevent chewing or getting into potentially dangerous situations. While our gate wasn't closed all the time as Kodi got older, we left it up, and used it from time to time, until he was at least two. It was money well spent.

Here is the gate we have:

We needed to buy two extention pieces to have it fit our wide doorway.

If that doesn't go wide enough, you can simply use ex-pens and zig-zag them across the space that needs to be closed off. We also have 3 ex-pens, and used ALL of them at times... Kodi went through a phase of wanting to tear bindings off all the books on lower shelves, so one was used to protect our built-in book shelves. Another was used to surround our Christmas tree, and a third was used to block a very wide opening between our kitchen and family room, first until he was reliably potty trained, and then (for longer) when he kept trying to eat the fringe on my expensive oriental rug!!!

There are still times that the ex-pens are handy, both for visiting dogs and when we need to keep him out of areas where workmen are busy... He's WAY too nosey, and prone to steal things from tool boxes!

He's a doll, and VERY friendly. But, as with most puppies, that first year or two can be a challenge!

Thumbs up Gates

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't think about climbing over getting "old". I also needed at 72 inches so I kept looking for something that had a door and length. Found Summer Infant Secure Surround Play Safe Play Yard, hoping it does the job as a gate...since it's longer than I need the wall and furniture on one side should make it secure...and it has a gate. I can also use it outside in the back yard to get her adjusted as well as contained as needed.

Let you know as I go on.

On the left Maggie at 9 weeks, on the right at 8 weeks....

Gates

Thanks everyone....since I needed 6' it was a challenge.

Finally decided on the Secure Surround PlaySafe Play Yard. Got it on Hayneedle in three days....$79.00 with coupon....

We'll see how it works with Maggie. I was able to take panels off and support it with furniture...I can open a gate and slide it so I don't have to climb over, use it for a bigger area and also make a large expen out of it for indoors or outside.
