Question Crate vs ex-pen - so confused!!

I need advise. Here's out schedule til now: We've had our Kallie for 3 weeks. She's now 13 wks old. Her ex-pen is set up in our living room. She's been sleeping in a bed inside her ex-pen at night. She hasn't been fond of crates (I know, another subject!!). DH & I both work. DH gets up @ 4:30 AM, gets her out of ex-pen, takes her out to potty, feeds her & then plays. At 5:30 he gets me up & I play with her til around 7:00. She goes out to potty 2-3 times during the morning. She then goes back into her ex-pen while I get ready & go to work. I come home around 11:30 - 12:00 for an hour. It's potty, eat & play time for her again. Then back into the ex-pen til around 4:30 PM when I get home. From that time til around 9:00 PM she's with us playing or resting beside us. 9:00 is then bedtime for her. She's usually falling sleep by then

DH thinks she needs to be sleeping in her wire crate in our bedroom. Eventually she will probably end up in our bed. So in order to get her used to the cage type crate, this morning I put her bed & her in it when I went to work. I then went home @ 11:30, woke her up & did the normal lunch routine. But when I left for work again I put her in her ex-pen. I just hesitated to put her back in the crate again.

So after the long-winded explanation - shall I just use the ex-pen? Or incorporate the crate? Or just the crate? I'm so confused. Or crate @ night & ex-pen during the day? We have 2 crates, 1 is small plastic one, other is larger wire one. She's doing very well with outside potty training. But in the ex-pen I do use pee pads. We have only used the small crate for travel (which after about 20 minutes she throws up).

Opinions from you experts that have gone thru all of this are very welcomed! We're very consistent with her, trying to keep the same routine every day.

Cool Awww

well if she is pretty active then the expen during the daytime is best because it allows more room it's a good idea to get her used to crates because she won't always have an expel so encourage her to be in the crate as well as the expen it's really up you and your little baby though

If everything is working nicely with the expen, I don't think you need to change your routine. Maybe you can use the crate for shorter periods of time as when you are getting ready for work or when you are home but are busy. It's good that she feels comfortable in the crate. You can use treats or give her some of her daily kibble while in the crate. But for longer periods of time ( when you are at work), I would keep using the expen with the pee pads in case she needs to go.

So you don't think she needs to be in our room in the crate @ night? I've thought about just putting her in bed with us, but afraid she'll fall off in the middle of the night. I did try it one night, but found myself waking every little bit checking to see where she was! Took her back to the ex-pen so I could get some sleep!! Bad Mommy!

I think it is better to have her in the bedroom but it doesn't need to be in a crate, if she is not comfortable in it yet. You can get another expen ( maybe a smaller one) for the bedroom. It is for sleeptime so you just need space to sleep and a pee pad. If she is happy sleeping in the living room and you feel comfortable with it then that's OK too. I would be nervous too having her in the bed since she is so young. She is very cute.

If she's fine sleeping alone in the living room at night, then she doesn't need to come in the bedroom. However, if you want her in the bedroom that's another thing entirely!

If you'd like her in the bedroom then you could use either crate. I used the plastic crate with Brody and put it up on a chair or night table next to the bed and then started transitioning him to the bed when he was around 4 months I think. One of the things I like about having him in bed with me is he sleeps later than when he was in his crate.

Thanks, we think she's pretty cute too. But aren't they all??!! I'm comfortable with her sleeping in the LR, but DH wants her in our bedroom. That's why I was trying to get her used to it this morning. She's just a happy little girl, and seems to be very adaptable. I'm afraid with the pee pads she won't learn to "hold it" and will always need the pee pads.

That's our main reason for eventually getting her to sleep with us. Right now she has a 4:30 AM alarm clock. And on the weekends we'd like to sleep a little bit longer!

Don't worry. You will see that eventually, she won't need the pee pad and it will be dry when you wake up. My 2 y/o is been sleeping without the UGO for a long time.

There is light at the end of the tunnel! Just kidding, we are head over heels in love with her. And I know she's a baby. She's actually doing very well sleeping from 9:00 PM til 4:30 AM. I'd love to keep her up a little longer, but she's just exhausted by 9. Can't even hold her little head up. But that's our goal so she does sleep thru the night.
