Teds first day of training

Today I brought Ted to a touristy town near where I live to see if I could attract people to pet him and to get him walking on a sidewalk and hearing the sounds of cars and motorcycles and get used to crowds. Ted was very timid at first but within no time we were in a pet shop looking around, then outside attracting throngs of admirers. I had children petting him and adults petting him and asking to hold him. I brought his foldup bowl with me and he had some water breaks too. I found patches of grass here and there and he did his business. Because we were in public I had Ted on a short leash, and he didn't mind at all. He had absolutely no crazy episodes and proved to me that he will be a good therapy dog. When people left after petting him, he actually turned around and sadly watched them walk away! Amazing how many people have not heard of Havanese dogs before. They couldn't believe that he was that small and almost 3 months old! I think a few people that he met today are now going to look further into the breed!
I did encounter 2 people with dogs but they were quite fine with me holding Ted away from them since he hasn't had his second shots (this Wednesday) although one of the dogs drank out of Teds bowl, so that was it for water til we got home. Luckily he was on his last pee break when the other dog drank his water!
He traveled very well with the crate strapped in and the airconditioner keeping him cool. He slept both ways and crashed for over 2 hours when we got home.

Lise, I'm so glad to hear about Ted's day. You're right, most people have never heard of the Havanese breed. As soon as this heat breaks I'm going to take Kallie to Cracker Barrel, a restaurant chain that has rockers on the front porch. I thought I'd just sit in the rocker & let people pet/hold her. Glad to hear you had such a good experience with people holding Ted.

He loved it. I will be bringing him back there or to a flea market next weekend. Hopefully the heat will break. Today was bearable at 27c. but it was humid

While it's great to have people pet and interact with your puppy, personally, I would not let strangers hold her. Puppies are wiggly, and people who are not VERY familiar with them can easily have them wriggle right out of their arms. If you feel like you HAVE to have people hold her, at least insist that they sit on the fround to do it, so that she cannot be hurt by a fall.

The people that I let pick up Ted were sitting and were older couples. Ted was having water breaks both times the ladies asked to pick him up. They were definately told how wriggly Havanese puppies were!
Otherwise people stooped down if he was on the leash or pet him while he was in my arms
You are right though. I'm nervous when my University daughter holds him and she knows how wriggly he is.

How great...a productive and fun day. Wish there were therapy classes around here (closest is 200 miles!). Keep up the good work!

Teds first day of puppy classes begins this coming Tuesday. It will be a long process before we hit therapy training. Nothing wrong with practising though
