car sick solution

Rudi is 9 1/2 months old and he has had issues with car sickness since we brought him home at 16 weeks. So, don't ask me why I thought it would be a good idea to take him on an 8 jour road trip to visit my son. In the past, we either held Rudi or put him in his crate, but this time i decided to put his doggy bed in the back seat (I know, safety issues, but I wanted to try it before getting him a doggy car seat). Miracle of miracle, no drooling or worse. He curled up in his bed with his chew stick and favorite toy, and was the perfect little traveller. I just wanted to share this for those of you dealing with car sick puppies -- there is hope :-)

Thanks for that Iris. Fortunately Rudi resolved his primary nauseous feelings and didn't develop secondary or what's called "superstitious" behavior. This is where nausea becomes a learned thing. They feel anxious and nauseous just upon aniticipating entering the car. It's a difficult problem for some to resolve and some dogs never are comfortable in a vehicle.

We have had a problem with McGee getting sick in the car, too. Our trips to SC (six hours) seem to be when he does it and usually just throws up once maybe twice. He doesn't appear to be anxious. A few months ago we went to Florida about the same distance as SC and he didn't get sick there or back! We're hoping he will outgrow it - Abby has. We just go prepared!!! We put his bed between us in the front seat and cover it with an old bedspread so we can keep folding it up as he gets sick! Not fun but it works. He was a year old in February so I hope he quits soon!

I tried the dog bed in the car with Rosie when she was little--no luck. I heard about the ear thing and would sit her next to me and massage her ears as we went down the road. Nothing helped but sedation. Therefore she doesn't go with us on trips. It is not worth it.
