Some Advice Please, Pen versus Crate??

Hey Everyone,

Happy to report Zoey is doing much better then she was when we first got her with regards to crying and whining constantly, still have some work but things are definately improving, she knows how to sit, and now we are learning lay down, walking is going much better, she still stops every now and then, but she's getting the hang out if, hosue training is going pretty well too. I have a question that I would like some advice now, Zoey currently sleeps in her crate over night, she usually lasts 6-7 hours and has never messed in her crate, we let her out then put her in her pen in the living room for a few more hours so we can sleep some more, she usually is pretty good and doesn't whine very long when we first put her in if at all, then after a few hours starts to cry, that's when we wake up for the day usually My question is, when we leave for any amount of time we usually leave her in her pen, with toys blankets and water, we both work shift work but zoey is usually not alone longer then 4-5 hours max we both can get home to let her out etc which is nice. I'm just wondering if we should actaully just be putting her in her crate when we leave versus the pen, because I don't want the pen to be in our living room forever and I'm afraid she will hate the crate now that she's use to the freedom of the pen when we leave, she also doesn't mess in her pen hardly ever. So which should we do, pen or crate? Any auggestions would be great, thanks everyone!

I would not leave my dog crated for long periods. Kodi is very happy in his ex-pen, with his bed, litter box, and water bottle. I think having an ex-pen set up for him is small price to pay for his comfort while we are out. I think if you can't leave your dog loose, or if, like Kodi, they are HAPPIER in their pen while you're out, an ex-pen is a much nicer solution for them than a small crate.

I only use the crate for night time sleeping, she's over a year and never had a problem. She loves it... I say "lets go to bed" and she makes her way to the crate we did use an expen, but mostly she Stayed in the kitchen when I wasn't home - now she's got full range of the house (when I'm home and when I'm out). I put my expen away months ago Keep doing what you are doing...sounds like its working great!

Yes, I think that the kitchen is a fine place for the dog to stay when you're not home, whether as a temporary "step" or a permanent solution. But if that's not possible, (or inconvenient... In our house it would require two gates and an accordianed ex-pen to close off the large opening between the kitchen and family room!) an ex-pen is another great solution. Both give the dog much more space to move around than a crate.
