34"

So all this time I had considered myself lucky that Quincy hadn't climbed out of his ex-pen. Every time I read about someone else's experience, I counted my blessings. Nah, won't happen to me, I confidently said, Quincy is content with his treat filled Kong and his comfy crate and we're never gone more than a couple of hours.

Tonight we came home from dinner to find our beloved Quincy had climbed out of his Iris 34" tall ex-pen. He happily came around the corner and greeted us as we walked into the kitchen. I was just about to turn around and go into the living room to let him out when I hear the faint clicking of puppy toenails coming up behind me. Checked the pen, yup, hubby remembered to close/latch the door, yet here's Mr. Q running around the house like he owns the place LOL. I was so scared that he might have hurt himself that I checked him over from head to tail to make sure he was all right.

What am I going to do with him now?????

To all of you with puppies the same age (just about six months), I hope it's not your turn next LOL.

Pixie did the same. They sell tops for the pens-that did the trick.

I feel your pain, Zoey's ex-pen had officially retired I'm too afraid of her getting hurt by either climbing or jumping out and we live in norhtern alberta so buying a top for the pen just isn't an option, we just stick to the crate now, she doens't like it very much but she's getting use to it. She was never destructive when she jumped out, it's just she's not entirely house trained yet so we don't want to regress backwards. Our hope is once that is in check she can have free roam of the house as it is very small and if we keep all the doors shut it's a limited amount of space anyways, I hope you find a solution that works, whether it's a top or crate or confining him to a separate room instead. He was probably just so excited to say " See Mom look what I can do " Best of Luck

Oh, my. I'm not looking forward to this new trick! Have you figured out how he jumped out? Does he have a crate in the ex-pen? Kallie doesn't have anything to climb on in hers. When she stands up on her hind legs her front feet just reach the top of the pen (24"). I just never imagined that she would be able to get out of it! Now how are you going to contain Q?

I think this has at least as much to do with "want to" as ability. Kodi can clearly jump a 24" gate (the height of hi ex-pens) but he never has. He just likes to be in there. Tillie, who is half Kodi's size as an adult hasn't been able to be kept in an ex-pen since she was a small puppy.

This is the first time he's jumped out He has always been happy in there with no problems. I think what happens is that his paws reach pretty far up when he's standing on his back legs. He kind of hooks the front paws then bounces up with those rabbit back legs. He can jump pretty high just from seeing him play when he's wound up. I have no idea how long he was out and about but the whole house is puppy proofed so there's nothing he can get into that would hurt him. Hubby thinks he just went into our bedroom and laid on our bed until we got home. He was quite proud of himself, I must say LOL. I think another part of it is that he has pretty free reign around the house because I work from home. If he's not laying under my desk while I work, he's playing with toys in the living room or sleeping on our bed or just looking at stuff going on outside through the sliding door in our bedroom.

Hubby is going to try and rig something up to put over the top and see if that helps. Maybe a tarp?

If I have to, I can put the baby gates back up and confine him, but I would prefer not to. Who's to say he won't try to climb over the gates too - they're not as tall. Our house is pretty open so we don't have many doors that we can close to keep him in just one room without gates. Our bathroom is really too small to keep him in there. Oy vey! I hope the thing hubby rigs up today works.

Yes, his crate is in there, but it's a wire crate. I don't think he could really get good enough footing to stand on top of it, but you never know, I guess! Maybe I'll put just his bed in there without the crate. I like to keep his crate in the pen, with the doors open, so he has access to a pee pad if he needs it.

My pen is 30" high but Ted wont even jump out of the door if I leave it open. Funny because with a run he isnt afraid to jump in! Because of the way I have the crate he is not able to use the crate as a jumping off point. There is a wall on the left side of his pen and one at the back of it. The crate is in that back ,lefthand corner. I think I may have also lucked in that Ted is smaller. Dont know if he will ever be physically tall enough to jump out. Like Dory, my house is open too. All the bedroom and bathroom doors are closed and since Ted is velcroed to me I dont really have to worry about him wondering around....so far

Once I retired the crate as a confinement method, I just used baby gates to limit Marlowe's unsupervised roaming. If Quincy didn't have any accidents, you might consider giving him a bit more freedom. I started giving Marlowe some freedom at 7 months of age, working slowly up to free reign (both up and downstairs) by 2 yrs old.
