Suggestions for night with new puppy

Hi! We wont be getting our new Hav puppy until late April but I am trying to get prepared Just wondering what you all have done with your babies at night. I have a 2 story house and have a crate and pen for the living room where we all congregate, and bought a small crate with the intention of keeping it next to my bed for nite time. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I have had my puppy for 2 weeks, he is 12 weeks old. I put a small crate next to my bed, actually on the nightstand. He can see me and sleeps well there.

My small crate lasted two nights. I had it next to me in bed and would put my fingers in when she cried. Next the door got opened and I corralled her next to me for a night. Then the crate left and she slept right next to me . I have never been able to just let kids or puppy's cry.

Too funny Suzy - with all of my guys I did the same thing - right next to me at night in the crate, morning, they were in the bed, curled up next to me. I didn't get much sleep. At least we always started out in the crate!

Sounds like you are thinking about and planning things out - which is great!

I will probably follow in your footsteps andstart with the crate and end up with the puppy in my bed lol....any wagers on how long till i cave? Buying puppy stuff and getting everything set up is helpi.g to pass the time! I have 9 weeks to wait I am having surgery 3/8 though, so i couldnt really have gotten a puppy much sooner. My first night with Tucker in February of 2000 was funny.

he was my first dog. I had setup a pen in my kitchen (moved my kitchen table out), had a wee wee pad, his crate, water, etc. I went to bed and within 30 minutes he was crying like a baby. I didnt know what to do. This went on for multiple hours.

Then i brought the crate into my bedroom. Well, it was down on the floor and i was up too high. He was crying again. So, I went into my den, got my TV tray and put his crate on top of it. It was the exact height as my pillow.

That was what worked. Now... months later as he got bigger and me being a late sleeper, he would start huffing and puffing and pushing on the front of the crate (pet carrier) to get out. Well, he was rocking that TV Tray to where at one point it was on two legs and about to flip over. That's when it was time to get a bigger crate and it had to go on the floor. LOL

I had Brody in his crate on my night table, so he was at bed height. I could easily reach over and stick my fingers in the crate if he needed reassurance. We did that for a few months until he graduated to the bed.

That's exactly what we have done with Julie since she came home at 8 weeks. A small crate for sleeping sits by our bed at night. We move it to the expen in our kitchen during the day. She's contained there (in the kitchen pen) unless one of us is with her. Then she has the run of the family room too. She's been with us 7 weeks and it is working out great. She sleeps thru the night and, with limited access to the house, potty training is going very well.

Thank you all for sharing! I love reading all the posts and it is really helpful to hear from experienced Hav owners! I have had dogs all my life, but only a few times have i raised a puppy. We had a Cane Corso puppy we got in March of 2011, and my husband slept on the couch next to him at night ( he had to be put to sleep last month due to a rare aggressive bladder cancer). My husband is ok with having the puppy in our bedroom though
