Playing with stones

My puppy Titan has a habit of playing with yard stones. He pick's them up and play's tag with Katie and the stone's. He act's like the stone is a toy and tries to keep it from her. I have tried several times to stop him from doing this in fear of him swallowing a stone. Has anyone ever had this problem? My yard is full of stones in my pathway's and I hate the thought of moving them all. And I can't be here all the time to watch over him.

Not stones, but Shelby picks up every acorn on our walks. She even munches on them.

No, but it reminds me of this episode of the Dog Whisperer where the dog was obsessed with stones. I think it was this last season? Have you tried spraying with bitter apple?

Kubrick has never done much with stones... I've seen him pick it up once but he spit it out. I'm not sure what you could do other than the bitter apple that Kara suggested. Good luck!

Thanks Kara I will try spraying the stones where Katie and Titan play most. However here in Oregon it rain's a lot and I don't think they make that much bitter apple to be applied each day. But maybe it will take his mind off them for awhile at least until something else comes up for him to play with. He also takes all their toys outside and each night I have to gather them up like cleaning up a daycare for kids. Way to funny. Got to love these puppies.

Sedona has been known to eat small rocks when she can find them. Luckily she doesn't find them often.

I think that says Katie on your avatar? She's very cute!

I think if you just break the pattern for a few weeks, you'll stop it. Another idea I had was spraying with a water bottle or water gun when he does it. OR...getting a can and putting coins in it and shaking it? That bothers some dogs. LOL Now, Gucci LOVES getting sprayed with water bottles, she thinks it is GREAT fun to try and drink it.

But look for the rerun of Whisperer about the dog obsessed w/ rocks. I think Cesar had to take him to the pack for a few weeks because he was SO obsessed with them.

Hi Susan. Yes Katie is my white Havanese female and Titan is my chocolate male. Katie had to be shaved totaly down due to major matting. She look's so bony now but the hair is growing back. No more sprinkler's for that young lady in the future when Momma isn't home.

Benji loved to chew on stones and pebbles when he was a puppy. I had to be very watchful as puppies can break their teeth while chewing on stones. He loves to toss stones and play with them now but doesn't always chew on them. He is 10 months. I had a small patch where I have stones, I just put a barricade around it. Perhaps spraying Bitter Apple would help.

Best, Poornima
