Question Puppy coming home soon :)

In 10 days we will be welcoming our havanese puppy to our home. We are all so excited (hubby, myself and 2 kids) and have been preparing for the new arrival for the past 6 weeks or so. I am so happy I found this forum because so many of you have such practical advise and are so helpful. I do have one question. I remember it being mentioned here that "potty training" and "housebreaking" are two different things, and that I should begin with the potty training. I have the puppy pads, expen, crate ready to go, but I would like if someone could suggest a working schedule. From what I know, my breeder is crate training the pups to spend from 11:30pm to 7am, I am sure she will provide me with the feed schedule soon, but I would like some sort of idea as to when to incorporate naps and outside walks etc. I hope I am making sense I would like to implement as much consistency as possible so that our pup feels secure with the big change. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yes, Happy New Year!!!

Personally I found that the best was to go by your scedule. they will need to live with it for the rest of their lives, so you should work all the components into your work schedule. I am very excited for you!!! We brought home a new baby boy today - ourselves!!!!

Congratulations Laurie on your new addition!! I look forward to seeing some pics too

As for the schedule thing, I do agree that it has to be "our" schedule. I guess when I write I don't make as much sense as I do in my own head What I meant was if anyone could provide me with a rough guideline of how they work in naps during the day. Our puppy is crate trained and I do wish to keep that consistent. But I am not sure how much of a nap is good in the morning, do they have afternoon naps? etc. It's been so long since I have had a puppy - I was 10 yrs old and I had no clue then, and to be honest I have no clue now :0 Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just let him sleep as much as he wants to in his expen, which will be most of the time just like a baby. My best motivation for going potty on command is right after they wake up but before they can come out to play. No eye contact, smiling, or baby talk before they go potty but immediately after, his world starts turning again and gets much praise and can come out to play.

Thank you Tom. I will do that and focus on getting him to potty on command. In your experience how long does it take if we are consistent with them? My puppy will be 3 days shy of 10 wks when he comes home. He is paper trained as well, but I am switching him to pads, just for easier clean up. We are extremely excited and we want to do things right - right from the beginning. I am assuming that as soon as we walk in the home we should put his little crate in the expen and show him the pad? Or what have some found works best? I thank you all for all your support and help.
