Leo's new buddy!

Yesterday morning, I took Leo and a little friend on an outing! Leo has had limited, very controlled interactions with children that have all been positive. My little friend has never spent much time around dogs and is a bit hesitant around them. We went to a local small farmer's market. The little girl learned to hold his leash and get his attention so he would walk with her. After we shopped, we walked to a nearby grassy area where both Leo and my friend learned just how much fun a child and a puppy can have together! They ran, chased, cuddled giggled, and fetched for over an hour! It was really the sweetest thing watching them learn to interact and trust that they could play together without getting bitten or stepped on. My little friend learned to pick Leo up properly with one hand supporting him underneath and wanted a picture to show her mom and dad. It was cute so I'm sharing!

They are both so cute and look so comfortable with each other. My kids are older 14 & 17 so Tim hasn't had a ton of time with younger ones. I do meet a group of neighbors for a morning dog walk at the elementary school bus stop and his interactions with the children have been great. We met a young girl on our walk yesterday whose parents said she is normally afraid of dogs but Tim was such a gentle little man they were cuddling in no time to the amazement of her parents. I heard the little girl telling her parents she wanted a puppy just like Tim.

Fantastic that you are making sure that Leo is socialized with children, and it's great for the little girl too!. I have to caution you, however, about letting her (or ANY child) pick up or hold Leo off the ground. Even the quietist puppy can turn into a STRONG wiggling bundle that is too much for any child to control or hang onto at the flip of a switch. And WAY too many puppies get seriously hurt being dropped on the ground from that distance. It makes me cringe seeing Leo being held over a concrete surface by a child of this size/age.

Please encourage them to play all kinds of games together, but ON THE GROUND. If she wants to hold Leo, that's great... have her sit on the ground and hold him in her lap. Everyone, including your little girl friend there, would feel AWFUL if Leo ended up getting hurt.
