A phase...or something more?

Lately Piper whines and barks all.the.time if we aren't sitting right on the floor next to her. If we are at the table and she's at our feet, she whines. If we are on the couch and she's on the floor, she whines. I am going a little crazy. She didn't used to do this, so I am hoping it's a phase. We don't acknowledge her when she whines and we've been rewarding her heavily when she's quite...but so far no improvement.

Any tips??

I would continue what you're doing except to add that you need to be sure there isn't any unconscious reinforcement such as an exasperated sigh, slight glance in her direction, ANYTHING that acknowledges that whine or bark when she's wanting attention. be sure you know she doesn't need to go out and the behavior is to get you to initiate interaction. Then catch her when she's sitting or laying quietly and softly praise and treat then go back to what you were doing. Repeatedly reinforce the behavior you want while completely ignoring the behavior you don't. She'll get the message if you and others in your household are consistent.

It's a phase. For many of them, if you've been strong and managed to completely ignore attention barking, they next resort to more subtle ploys. Whining is the next step down. Another is to come up and silently paw at you with pleading eyes. Kodi's current one is to lie at my feet, with his head on his paws, and the most PITIFUL look on his face!

Dionna has also mastered a pleading look--not with me, mind you, but with my mom who will then believe Dionna needs a snack. My mom will often tell me that she thinks that Dionna needs a snack and I tell mom that she is being manipulated. Mom is not convinced but she at least does not give snacks to her.

Henry snorts. It sounds quite rude actually but it makes me laugh. Is he a mini Bull or a dog?

That captures it exactly! Benjamin has just started doing this, and at first I could not figure out what he was telling me. He is potty trained to both indoors and out, I take him out for enough potty walks and he can hold it for a long time, and besides he knows to go on the potty pad if I don't get around to walking him in time. He has never had to ask to go out to potty, but I thought maybe that's what he wanted, so I took him out. He did the same thing the next day, after he had pottied not too long before. Then I figured it out. He thought I had been spending entirely too much time on the computer, and not playing with him! I don't mind, though, he is right, I do spend too much time on the dang computer.
