Question Teaching Cocoa to Like the Leash

Cocoa hates her leash. We tried to put it on her and let her drag it around. When we try to put the leash on she tries to bite us. She barks and cries when it's on.
We've tried walking around the house with her leash but she lies down and refuses to go anywhere. When we tug on it she cries. She's only 10 weeks old but eventually she's going to have to get use to it. Any suggestions?

First, she's VERY young, so you have PLENTY of time. Second, she has NO idea what it means when you tug on her leash. I'd continue to put it on her and let her drag it (with supervision) but I would NOT try to "lead" her until she is TOTALLY used to that. Give her lots of praise and treats (it can just be her kibble... just remember to reduce her regular meal by that amount!) while she's got the leash on her so that she starts to look at it as a good thing.

There are good videos on You Tube on starting her with loose leash walking. Look for those by Kikopup or All Dog's Inn and Gym. Also, enroll her in a good Puppy Kindergarten ASAP. The trainer should be able to help you get her started!

When should I start my puppy in kindergarten?
Thank you,

Are you encouraging Cocoa with rewards? I used little teeny tiny cut up hot dogs for this with lots of praise!

As soon as you can get him enrolled in a good one! The earlier the better!

She might tolerate the leash better once she learns to associate it with fun things like going outside. We never had much luck introducing the leash indoors. As soon as she started getting regular walks, she stopped caring about the leash. Even when she pulls, she isn't worried about the leash, just obsessed with reaching whatever it is she wants to check out.

I hope you've got a good vet who knows modern "best practice". As long as your pup has had two sets of shots, she should be good to go in the controlled environment of a Puppy K. Early socialization is CRITICAL, and the window of opportunity is closing by 16 weeks. If you want an out going, well, balanced dog who easily accepts other people and dogs, it is critical to startthis process ASAP. (In fact, the breeder should have started it before they left home... You should just be continuing it)

Many more dogs end up in shelters or euthanized because of poor/late socialization than end up dying of diseases as puppies. It's THAT important.
