when to enlarge pen

My pup has been in his ex-pen for nearly a week. It's outfitted with crate, food, water, toys, and potty place, with just a little floor space that isn't covered by one of these. He used the potty place immediately, and has consistently been going on it.

How long would you keep a puppy in these cramped quarters before expanding the size of his ex-pen to give him a little more room?

Give him about half again as much space, and see how he does. I'm assuming you are taking him out to play sometimes right after he potties. During those times, open the pen, or set his box right outside the pen, and play with him in a space so he can go back to it.
