Xpen Set up

Here is a photo of Ivy's Xpen. I think its a good size. I can make it much larger with the extra panels but I know it's not a good idea to give them too much space. This is where she will be from 8:30 til 11:45 Mon to Fri, plus anytime I'm out or we can watch her closely. It is in the family room.

Should I cover the rest of the floor with the piddle pads? Actually, they are not true piddle pads. They are the ones that the hospital use. I don't like that dog piddle pads have a scent that attracts them. It is my goal that Ivy will only go outside to washroom. The pads are there for when I am not home and she can't hold it. Much like how newspapers were used before the invention of piddle pads. I think I will cover the rest of the area now that I think about it.

Probably better to set up the expen in a 2 X 4 configuration to start with. EVERYTHING will be new. Give her a few days and if she only goes on the appropriate potty surface then you can make it a bit larger a few more days before expanding again. If she goes on the floor rather than the peepad or litterbox back up and give it a few days. She will have lots to get use to and you want to give her every chance to be successful.

Is she already trained on the pads? If so, a 4x4 space would probably be fine. Sorry, can't see the pic! I'd put something under the whole thing to protect the floor. I use a piece of marine vinyl from the fabric store but lots of things work. Just for the occasional accident or water bowl spill. Also nice if you give any meals in the pen. It gets strangely dirty quickly.

The picture didn't work so I tried again. It is in the second post.

4X4 seems like a lot of space for a little puppy. I like the idea of putting something under the whole area. Maybe like a shower curtain liner.

I used a shower curtain liner and later a vinyl table cloth in the expen.

You guys are getting me in puppy thinking mode. I need to actually go find my expen and dust it off, I hope it's in the basement. I feel fortunate that this is my second time around and the first time worked well so I'm going to keep my process the same. I started small and built my way up. I put the expen by the door I wanted him to use to ultimately go outside to do his business. I think I was a bit premature taking Tim out of his expen when he complained. He learned very fast and actually wasn't in a confined expen very long, he was gated off in our family room for a while but that's where we spend most of our time so it didn't seem he was so isolated. I only hope that little Mae will be as easy as Tim, but I have learned with my daughters that everyone is different, I'm trying very hard not to anticipate based on my experience with Tim.
