Puppy and cats

Our puppy is almost 7 months old and since we brought him home at 10 weeks our 2 cats have rarely left the safety of the basement laundry room. When we first brought our pup, also named Gibbs, home we set up a barrier on the main floor that kept him and the cats separate. The barrier has been down for a couple of months but the cats have not adjusted to having the dog roaming around. There is a small cat door to the laundry room that Gibbs can't fit through and that is where we feed them and keep their litter box.
Our son's dog, a puggle named Cerby, stayed with us often and the cats tolerated him and even slept beside him on our bed. Cerby is a calm submissive dog who leaves them alone.
Gibbs barks at them and chases them around the house if he gets the chance.
The cats get very nervous and hiss at him and I can't blame them.
I took Gibbs to a pet-food store where the owner's cats wander around and Gibbs did not react to them. They were calm and so he stayed calm.
Does anyone have any advice on how we can get these animals to tolerate each other?

If your lucky in about 10 years they might decide that Gibbs is tolerable. We have had cats and dogs most of our married (35 years) life. (Don't currently have cats - the last one passed away in 2009) Some of them have been buddies and some barely tolerated each other even after many years. Give the cats plenty of verticle surfaces and other safe places to get away for the dog. Praise the dog profusely for any calm appropriate interaction with the cats and do not permit him to harass the cats. There are no quick fixes when it comes to cats and dogs. Some enjoy interacting and others really do not.

Cats are creatures of habit. When we got our kitten we already had two dogs, so he didn't know any different. The dogs have since passed on and we have Sophie. They play like dogs.Sometimes the cat hisses. Sometimes he wants to play. It can't be forced.
My daughter has a wheaten that the cat will not tolerate, probably because he looks very different from any dog we have. So when Tucker comes, Pepper goes.
