New puppy questions

Hi, gotta few things I'm curious about. Benji is 8.5 weeks old and I've had him for 5 days.
Housetraining question... How many times does a male puppy pee before he's finished? I had thought I"d be going outside maybe every 2 hours. However, he pees, I reward him , wait a little longer , then come inside. Half hour later I see signs I should take him out again ( sniffing, going to wee pad), and sure enough, he pees again. Wondering if I need to wait longer outside...
Curious how long the rest of you are staying outside with your pups..
Posted this on health discussion, but I wonder what the rest of you are doing about the Heartguard Plus dose.. I think I'm only going to give it part of the year ( instead of year round as my vet recommended) and will try to space it out to 45 days.. Wondered about the dose.. giving a pill to a 3.6 pound dog, that also is good for a 20 pound dog seems like overkill...Also, are you getting plain Heartguard or Heartguard Plus from your vets?
Food: Do you soften the kibble with water? If so, until what age? My puppy arrived with being used to kibble with a little water to soften it.

Male puppies don't pee any more or less often than female puppies... he's just still very young. Marking is a completely different issue, and he's too young to be doing that. I wanted Kodi to learn to go pretty much as soon as I took him out. So I didn't spend much time outside with him on potty runs. If he didn't go within a minute or two, we went back inside. He learned pretty soon not to fool around about it. :-) Of course we also spent LOTS of play time outside, so he learned that going potty (and lally-gagging) wasn't the only way to have "out side time" When you think they need to poop, you may need to spend a little more time with them. Most need to find the "right" place, and do their little "potty dance" circle to get ready!

I'd check with the vet about cutting the AMOUNT of the Heartguard pill. Some pills are meant to be broken, others do not have the medication evenly distributed, and you can end up feeding a part of the pill that has little or no medication in it.

As far as frequency, yes, every 6 weeks (or 45 days) is fine AS LONG AS YOU NEVER FORGET!!! I do the same thing, but mark it on my calendar so I don't make a mistake. You need to know the temperatures overnight in your area to know what months you need to dose. Remember that you are doing for AFTER exposure, not before. For me, that means that we start with a blood test to make sure he's clear (that's VERY important if you dose only part of the year) and then start Heartguard in June. He gets his last dose in Dec. I use Heartguard. I don't even know what Heartguard Plus is, but I tend not to like "comb" drugs.

Kodi never needed his kibble softened, but he had all his (puppy) teeth when we brought him home, and was a bit older than your guy, at 11 weeks. As long as he has all his teeth (some Havanese puppies get them late) it wouldn't hurt to try some dry and see how he handles it. If you are feeding kibble, make sure it's a good quality one!

Hi Karen,

I did ask the vet tech before I left and she said give the whole pill..I"m just questioning it in my mind because it seems like a LOT for a little teeny weeny.
Thanks for your the other info! I have so much to learn..

Then it's probably because the medicine is unevenly distributed. I WOULD take it back and ask for plain Heartguard, though. Why expose him to two different chemicals at once? I try to use flea/tick preventative as little as possible, but when I do need to use it, I ALWAYS make sure I dose it as far away from the heartworm meds as possible. That way, if he has a reaction to either one, it's clear WHICH one it is!
