Hi all - So I have 2 Hav puppies and LOVE them to pieces. Maggie, the older one, is almost 8 months and has been wonderfully litter box trained with hardly any accidents from day 1. So I'm really spoiled with that.
Enter puppy #2 Bodi - he is a sweetie but not interested in the litter box at all. He was 5 months on 11/5. We crate him overnight and anytime I'm not watching him closely. I'll take him out to go potty, which he does very well, although he usually has to pee twice, so I have to wait for the 2nd one if I don't want it on my floor. Then I bring him in and let him play with Maggie for 10-20 minutes. Sometimes he'll pee after only 10 minutes (they're really active) and other times I can let them play close to a half hour with no problem. After play time, I crate him again for say an hour for rest or nap, then I take him out again and repeat process.
My problem is, if I take my eyes off him at all, he almost always has an accident. It will either be by the baby gate leading to the door or near the litter box. He still hasn't started "showing" me he has to go. I tried bells on the door - he's not interested. I take him out front to potty, because it's faster and I want him to know the difference between "Play time " and "potty time". When they go out back, it's play time and they potty if they need to.
The front door is down the hall from the kitchen baby gate, so not sure how to get him to start "telling" me or how long it takes. I can see the signs if he has to go - he starts frantically sniffing, but never does he sit near the gate or whine, etc. Am I on the right track? Do I just have to keep it up and he'll be more demonstrative as he gets older?
Thanks in advance for your tips and feedback
