We have a Jumper!

Imagine our surprise when, after putting Casey in her exercise pen and leaving for a nice dinner out, DH and I returned home two hours later to find Miss Casey greeting us at the door! Yep, we have a jumper.

I have no idea how long she was 'at liberty', but she was a good girl and didn't seem to get into any trouble. However, I am left to wonder how I am going to deal with this. I need to know she will be safe in her ex-pen when we are at work or gone out. Does anyone have any suggestions (and please don't say I need to go out and buy a taller ex-pen. DH will kill me if I spent any more $$ on Casey).

Is there anything in the pen that she is using as a step? If so, remove that. If she is climbing the bars, then the only way I know you can safely contain her is to get a snap-on cover for it. The pen will need to be configured into a square and several web sites sell it, but that means you're spending more money too.

I just discovered that I have my first pen climber also. I put some crates on the opposite side (as a barrier) because he was only climbing one area that had horizontal bars (vs. the usual lateral bars). You might be able to barricade the sides that she is climbing too - if you can figure it out.

good suggestions...

There are different types of covers...and dogs do like dens so that could be okay for her. Riki doesn't know he can jump the xpen although he easily could. Daisy figured it out as a puppy. For some reason, she can hunch back on her back paws and jump to great heights.

I've seen some havanese use their teeth to open crates and others use it like a step ladder to get out. These dogs are smart.

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

I found a few types of covers for you, so you can look at the options that are easy to purchase. I found these by going to Google and typing "exercise pen cover" (without the quotes) and found quite a variety.

This one has snapping straps: http://www.grooming-pet-supplies.com...lies/item.html

This one is a metal fence-style (like an ex-pen): http://www.westcoastpetsupply.com/2/...rcise-Pen-Top/ (Unfortunately, I don't see a way to enlarge it to look at it closer)

This one looks like the top of the line version (and priced that way too) with heavy duty nylon: http://www.shopcamelot.com/x-pen_supl.html

We never had an expen, but we did have a baby gate we put along one side of our makeshift play area. Tito somehow managed to come out of his area, poop on the bed, then be miraculously back in his area when Tad would come home.

These guys are mischievious!
Good luck climb proofing your baby's area.

Kimberly, thank you for your sound advice (as always) and for researching the ex-pen covers. Looks like that is the way I'll have to go. (Sigh $$$ ;-)

Estrella, thanks for the chuckle -- that's one tricky little trickster you got there!!
