Question Retained Baby Teeth and spay age

Daisy's ADULT upper canines are down - but she's retained her baby canines. She is 6-1/2 months old. I've heard they usually pull retained teeth when the vet spays females....but I was planning on waiting awhile because of the growth plate controversy.

I hate to have her under anesthetic twice... so is it okay to have both sets of canines in? Or will it distort her other teeth?

Is it better to move up her spay to get the teeth out?

Thanks for your opinions!

Hi Lynda,

I had a similar situation with Scout. We were going to wait just a tad bit longer to have him neutered, but his baby canines really had to come out. Both his breeder and I agreed that it was best to just put him under once and have everything taken care of at once. Even now, I think I waited a month too long - he has a crooked tooth on the bottom jaw.

Lynda this happened with Monte on one tooth. I know I have a picture someplace I will have to find it for you. Anyways me and Kim decided to do everything at once and just as I got everything scheduled it fell out LOL.

Yes, it can mess up the other teeth as well as her jaw alignment. Her jaw is still growing and with the extra canines in there, it can keep things from moving correctly.

You can help by putting a little pressure on the canines, trying to move them forward, backward, in and out. I just did that with my Mousse who retained two canines and one fell out that night even though it didn't seem like it was budging. (I had a dog trainer show me how first.) You just need to be very careful not to push too hard because you don't want to break the tooth and then need surgery to have the base removed too.

I had Jillee spayed at around eight months and they pulled some teeth out then...I think only one. I would talk to Kim and see what she thinks. I also got Betzie spayed at eight months as well. Let us know what you decide!!

Do what Kimberly says, try to wiggle them (gently). Tito had two stubborn canines and one wiggled out alright. She also recommended we get rawhides and other chewy things that might help move it around.

Tito's other canine would not budge so I decided to get the tooth pulled as to not mess up his bite.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try wiggling her teeth for a couple of days and see if they loosen.

Same thing with Sophie. We were waiting for her last teeth to come out and finally decided to go ahead with the spay at 6.5 mo. and have her teeth pulled while she was under. Luckily they came in fine.

Unconditional love!
