rolling in certain smells

My new puppy Shadow discovered a dead worm the other day and decided to roll in well as eat it.. My last rescue dog rolled in mess sometimes.. Anyone know why animals do this in nature? Can take the rolling on a worm but hope eventually doestn't roll in the other...thanks...

Oh yes, rolling. Brady loves to roll. I have been woken up many morning by my husband screaming for me because Brady has taken a dive into something nasty. Dead worms stink! But, even worse is fox poop! Brady just loves diving in fox poop. YUCK

They roll in stinky things to disguise their own smell. It's supposed to be better for hunting.

ella sniffs the worms down and then tries to pin them with her shoulder. she then tries to eat them. my vet explained this is a hunting instinct!!!

I once bought some special breath-freshening dog treats that had mint and chlorophyl in them. I gave one to Dusty and she rolled all over it and finally got around to eating it. If that was all she had ever rolled in we would be doing well. Usually all she can find in our yard is bird poop.

My guys do the same thing - but I can never figure out what it is they are rolling in. I would guess it probably "was" a worm, which one of them ate, and then they all have to roll in the same spot over and over again!! Go figure!!

Gryff rolled all over a dead snake once. A dog I used to have would run into the yard and roll in our faulty septic system. Now that was gross.

I always thought rolling was adorable until Belle had a dead frog stuck to her back and I had to remove it since we were out at a picnic.... they do remind us they aren't little people in fur coats once in awhile!

My guys have been rolling in dead field mice lately! It's always right after I give them a bath! Last week fred rolled in runny dog poo and got it all over himself and new winter coat. What a mess.
