OK - the count down begins...so do the questions!

Hi guys, most of you know Finnegan will be here in a week, so here starts the PITA questions I will be posting for a few weeks. My first is introduction to the household. I have read here that I should bring Seamus outside to meet Finnegan, got that down; my question is after day 1. You see when we got Seamus the other two were older and set in their ways so accepting a puppy was fun (at times) and/or OK (most of the time) so it was no big deal that he came to work with me for a while during the day (I puppy pad trained). Now 2 years later, Seamus and Hamlet stay in the house together (Ozzie passed away). Seamus goes with me most places all weekend and any time after work or days off (Hamlet HATES the car and is much more content at home). Soooo, do I use an expen and keep him home with Seamus (coming home at lunch), or do I bring him? I'm concerned that Seamus will get jealous or that bringing him may jeopardize their bonding, but I am also concerned about leaving a 10 week old puppy alone for 3-4 hour stretchs.
Sorry this is sooo long - but let me get one more question in - Puppy pad training - Seamus barely uses it now but should I put I new one out for the puppy or can he use the same one (I'm speaking of the pad holder and location) THANKS guys, please bare with me!! Panic stricken new mom on board Michelle

No suggestions at all from me, really, except that I had Tucker in the large crate/playpen alone for 3-4 hours at a time when he was about 10 weeks old. Had to, I had college class. He did well, didn't have accidents, and I carried him outside immediately upon arriving back home. I never have used the pads.

I am not sure about all the questions you asked, but let me try to answer. Yes, let the dogs meet in a neutral place, but I would consider an area that is not your property. Perhaps a friends house where you know there have not been any sick dogs. That is truly neutral. Your yard might feel like Seamus' yard.

Once you have both dogs at home, I would evaluate how to handle the work situation. Since you come at lunch, you can do one thing in the morning and another in the afternoon. Perhaps the puppy in the expen and Seamus having his regular run of the house would work best. But you might find the dynamics work differently for you once they meet and get to know each other.

Regarding the pee pad, the puppy needs a place to go that does not produce an "accident" when you are not home.

Good luck and I look forward to the pictures.

Hi Michelle,
It is nice that we will be going through puppyhood together

I wish I knew what to tell you about your work situation. I would be torn too. I think you should try to keep Seamus in the same routine he is in. Maybe you can take the puppy to work for part of the day and then bring him home for lunch time and put him in the expen. Or reverse leave him home in the AM and take him with you in the afternoon.

Good luck. I am off to wake up the puppy now and try to keep him up a little while so he sleeps tonight. Wish me luck.

Michelle,
I just got to thinking...I think Tucker was closer to 3 months before I had to leave him for class. And, I do remember a couple of accidents, too, in the crate during that time. But, not much.

I don't have any answers for you, just pure jealousy. Seamus is adorable and I won't even talk about Finnegan, because I'm so upset. : biggrin1:

Hi Michelle,

Congrats on your #2! My preferred "puppy" setup when I had to leave for extended periods of time included:

- xpen on a non-carpeted surface (you can get a vinyl flooring remnant cut to the right size if your whole house is carpeted)
- crate or dog bed (inside the xpen)
- pee pad (inside the xpen)
- water (depends on how long you'll be gone)

That way, your puppy will be safe, but can still go pee/potty on the pad and not be stuck in the crate with it just in case there is an accident.

I hope all goes well with the transition!
