Smile Introducing Gracie

Hi. My name is Karla and we just got our havanese puppy last weekend. She has been with us 1 week today. She is a real sweetie...she is 4 months old already.

She really minds well, and is pretty mellow for the most part. She is also my little shadow. Our only issue is potty training, but I have read that that can take a while. I have a litter box, but she doesn't want to go in it...I also have wee wee pads, which she goes next to most of the time. Grrrr. At least we only have one room with carpet and I keep that door closed.

One question I have is the tear stains...being all white, they are really standing out. What is the best thing to do to keep them at bay? I have tried the daily wipes with babywipes, and keeping the eyes dry, but they are really dark right now. Any tips on that?

That is her in my avatar. Look forward to getting to know you all.

She is adorable!!!
I add fresh parsley to Oliver's food and so far the tear stains are staying away.

Karla, welcome! Your Gracie is beautiful. There is a lot of help on this forum with tear stains. If you go to the search area you will find it all. It can be from the food you are feeding. Or just a puppy thing. Search and see if you find your answer.

Good luck,
Carole

Welcome, Gracie and Karla!

Much fun to you both!

I also add parsley to Cazzie's food, but I use dried parsley. I've been having less success with it lately than in the past and may have to switch to fresh.

Hi Karla and welcome.

There are many reasons for stains, food, allergies, yeast, but most likely she is just tearing more because she is teething. Bugsy had really bad tear staining when he was a puppy and nothing seemed to work, so I decided to try Angel Eyes ,(or you can buy Tylan powder which is the main ingredient in Angels Eyes and give 1/8 of tsp) even though I wasn't crazy about the fact that it was natural antibiotic. I decided to use one container and see how it works. It worked great to clear up all his stains, then on Sally's recommendations I started to use fresh chopped parsley, I actually started the parsley before I ran out of Angel Eyes. I've been using parsley ever since and the only time the stains came back was when I stopped using the parsley for five weeks. I had to buy another small container of Angel Eyes, use Spa Blueberry Vanilla face wash and started back on parsley. One small container of Angel Eyes cleared up most of the eye stains and face stains, but not all. I didn't buy another jar and just continued with parsley. I am happy to report that all of the staining around the eyes and mouth is completely gone and the only thing I do consistently is chop the parsley into the food once a day. I don't know what it is about parsley, but it works like a charm on him.

I also heard that natural yogurt, like Greek Yogurt from Trader Joe's works great, but Bugsy won't touch it. Also giving them bottled or distilled water is great and so is adding apple cider viniger (which mine also wouldn't touch). Also very important, what do you feed your little girl. The cheaper, supermarket food has a lot of additives that will color stain the fur.

Good luck,

-Julia

Gracie is a beauty...

Welcome! It's a fun place...

And how do we get picky havanese to eat parsley? I have homeopathic medicine for mine that taste really good and she hates them...she is the pickiest girl ever! But to get rid of staining, now that would be great!

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

Welcome Carla & Gracie - what a beautiful little girl!!!
My guys get distilled water, and 1 TBSP yogurt every day. That seems to really help Lily with her staining. Thankfully my other two have black around their eyes so I dont worry about them. I have found that Lily's staining can also be seasonal. In the fall, she seems to stain more than any other season.

Good luck and welcome!!!!

Welcome to the forum. I too give Benji and Lizzie 1 table spoon of organic yogurt every day. I also clean their eyes regularly. It seems to help.

Best, Poornima
