Crate all night or continue using open crate with ex pen

Hi all! I need some advice. I am curious on now what to do. Max sleeps in his crate at night with his door open to his ex pen. At night he leaves his ex pen and pees and poops on a potty pad. I am curious as to what the next step should be. I am at a crossroad in regards to ridding the potty pads and getting him fully trained. He relies on them too much and it's time to slowly become a bigger boy. His main issue is not being able to hold it longer than 15 mins. I think his issue with not holding it comes down to the freedom I have given him with his ex pen at night. I need him to start holding it longer (more than 15 mins).

Do I close his crate at night? I worried he will go back to peeing in his crate. I have placed the spacer in there and he only has enough room to sit, stand and lay.

Please help. He is 5 months now and should be able to hold it longer than 15 to 30 mins.

This is a toughie.

Are you taking up his water after a certain time? It's not a popular way of doing things I realize, but that is what I did so I could monitor food/water in and food/water out. I picked up the food after dinner and the water about an hour before bedtime. It's very easy to keep track then when they will use the bathroom. Try to closely monitor his intake of water and I would also try the crate with it closed (maybe take him out in the middle of the night and put him back in if you're worried he's holding it in and miserable).

Hang in there!

I would think if he is going pee every 15 minutes it might be worth checking with your vet to make sure there isn't a urinary tract infection. Once a twice a night I can see but every 15 minutes seems to me to be excessive.

If no medical reasons I would try closing the crate and seeing if he keeps it dry. Or start out a few hours in the closed crate and work up to all night.

I remember reading your other thread that you purchased him from a pet store and he wasn't potty trained prior to you getting him so expect a longer learning curve and more setbacks.

He will get there, havs are smart dogs

Something doesn't seem right. Ginger wasn't potty trained at 3months but now she is 5 months old and holds her pee all night long (8hrs). She's been doing this for about a month. She now sleeps on our bed. How many times does Max leave the crate to pee at night? Is Max drinking a lot during the day?
Think I would check with my vet.

I was thinking urinary tract infection too. I wouldn't take away his pee pad away though. Don't rush him. He will get it soon

We used the puppy apartment for the early night. But when we transitioned to outside pottying and a regular crate at night, Sasha could hold it pretty well - from about 11 to 7 a.m. Gets better with practice... but checking for a medical problem sounds like great advice first. Good luck!
