TAKING HEATH TO TAHOE ~~HOW TO POTTY??

We are going to take puppy Heath (17 wks old ) to Tahoe with us Saturday and leave Biscuit with the dog-sitter, which he loves. Heath will go potty outside in the grass (when taken, with a few inside accidents, if I forget~~he still doesn't signal me at all~~remind me that I will NEVER housebreak another puppy) , and will absolutely NOT use a pee pad inside (shreds/devours it), and shreds it as well in the little frame ($$ thrown away). I also got a $50 UGODOG and Heath-y just looks at me like, Lady, you must be craaazy. Why on earth would I pee on that funny-looking grate?
More $$ down the tubes! But he is adorable, that little face could melt a glacier. . . That is my mantra when frustrated, which is half the time. . LOL

So, what do I do to potty him at my Tahoe cabin, were it's single digits and there are heaps of snow? He already hates the cold here in Marin (30's in AM ). I have to coax him outside every morning. At Tahoe it's so icy I can't even walk him. I'm thinking of trying to buy some astro-turf tomorrow somewhere and take that with us and carry it outside. I'm dreading the trip, but he's too young to leave at the dog sitter's.

So what do you all do who live in the snow to housebreak a puppy ? Help! Thanks !

Wow...good luck!

Treats like crazy if he does potty outside!

I was wondering about the ugo thingy. My dogs never liked any of the contraptions. If he does pee inside, keep the cloth you wipe it up with in a plastic bag. Take it outside with you and he most probably will mark it again...

If you do get the softer fake grass, he will probably use it on top of the ugodog. Again, old pee scent works wonders...

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

He sleeps in a crate, right? Just keep him in there in the morning until you throw on your coat and grab his leash and then take him out. He's going to have to go out of necessity, so use that to your advantage.

And, definitely follow Linda's suggestion of treating when he goes. If you really think he's going to have trouble, take a high bonus treat for pottying (boiled chicken, string cheese or something else that makes Heath go nuts).

Yes, he does sleep in a crate, Kimberly. That sounds like a good plan, and I will stock up on something treat-wise that he cannot resist. Thanks !

And fuss over him like crazy using your potty word too: "Good potty Heath! Good potty!" He'll catch on quickly I bet... after the curiosity of the snow has been investigated. LOL

You know, I do say that endlessly to him, Kimberly, (I think my neighbors must be driven mad by it & think I'm ridiculous ) and so far I'm not sure he "hears" me. Though over time I know he'll get it. He does model Biscuit's behavior when he pees, which is hilarious. He is fascinated by Biscuit. They pee in tandem. But he poops in the deepest recesses of the hedge, where it's dark and dank and dirty, totally unlike Biscuit, who daintily poops on the lawn. . . . So seeing what he does in the snow will be interesting. . . .knowing him, he will turn tail and head for the warm house, LOL.

Another related question is: how long can a little puppy be outside in the snow (with a coat on ) and, esp., won't his little feet get frost-bitten ? How long can he safely be out there with nothing on his feet?
