Hot Sauce

Lulah loves chewing...we've been pretty successful at keeping it to her toys, but occasionally we turn our heads for a second and the next thing you know, she's chewing on the wooden table leg!

I know she knows she's not supposed to, because as soon as I make a move towards her, she backs up at lightspeed and gives me this look as if to say "I wasn't doing anything...honest!".

I have talked to quite a few people that told me their Hav (or other small dog breed) grew to like the taste of the Bitter Apple spray, so I totally skipped that. I've read about people using hot sauce. Actually, the family we met with who bought a Hav from the same breeder used hot sauce.

My question is, how much and how hot? We have Sriracha sauce...is that too hot? Should we get something else? And should I be using the teeniest tiniest bit? Can it hurt her?

Thanks for your advice!

Cate

It can "hurt" her in that she is likely to say "ouch" the first time she gets some in her mouth. BUT she is unlikely to repeat the experiment after that first time, and it can't do her serious physical damage. In Kodi's case, he was going after electrical cords, so it was critically important that he learn his lesson fast!!! It wasn't a case of "saving the furniture, it was a matter of saving his life! Fortunately, after a single taste, he would stay away from ANYTHING we put it on!

We used the hottest hot sauce we could find, but if I had the Sriracha sauce in the house already, I'd certainly try that first!

Thanks Karen!

We've made sure that all our electrical cords are covered or behind something for that reason, but there is one lamp cord that's behind a chair that is exposed. Every time she goes back there we call her back out immediately. But I will definitely be putting hot sauce on it, because I know she won't be able to resist it!

I put a tiny drop of the Sriracha on my finger and let Lulah sniff it...I'll tell you, she backed away lightning fast and started sneezing. I think this just might work!

Of course, then I made the mistake of licking it off my finger quickly instead of washing it off....hoooo, that's hot!

We covered and hid as many cords as possible, but there is only SO many that you can cover/hide before they find one SOMEPLACE. The ones he actually chewed THROUGH were not a safety problem because they weren't plugged in. ("just" computer cords left out by the kids, so "just" expensive!!!) But the fact that he chewed them at all, besides not wanting to have to replace any more of them, REALLY scared me because of the potential danger. So we felt that controlled exposure, with a serious, built-in, but non-lethal consequence, was the best solution to completely stop the behavior. Fortunately, it worked VERY well!
