Crate during the day

I'm back with yet another question! Fitz has slept through the night the last two nights. (he's 9 weeks old). I'm so grateful for the sleep, but he's especially energetic in the morning now. This morning we played for two hours, but then I had to leave. He loves his crate (he sleeps in it) and hates his ex pen. He cries and cries in it. This morning I left him in his ex pen, because he was in such a playful mood I thought he might like it better than being put in his crate. His toys and water were in there, as well as a Kong with some treats. When I came home two hours later, he had unlocked the pen and was sitting in the living room! Not okay.

My question is this: because he loves his crate, should I be putting him in that when I need to leave even when he is very playful? I try to tire him out before I leave, but I know that won't always be possible. I don't want him to start to hate his crate. He has a positive association with it now and I don't want it to turn negative, especially when he is just starting to sleep through the night. I will be working on getting him more comfortable in the pen for just a few minutes at a time, then building up. What would you all do? Thanks for the continued advice. I've been reading these boards for a while and have learned so much.

Don't know if it would work but some have attached the expen to the front side of the crate then left the crate door open so puppy could go in if he/she wanted to. You just have to be able to arrange things so puppy can't get on top of crate and use it as an escape route.

Pucks, tried that and Fitz is an escape artist! He managed to climb out. I've put the crate in the pen, and that seems to be okay. Right now my biggest project with him is getting him comfortable with being in the ex pen by himself. The crate seems to provide some comfort, as he climbs in there when he wants to nap.

If you aren't gone for more than a couple hours you can put Fitz in his crate with something yummy and safe to chew on such as a stuffed Kong. You will need to try to figure out a way to keep Fitz confined to a small area such as a small puppy proof room in the event that you need to be gone for a longer period of time.

I had the exact same problem with my pup a month ago. He loved his crate and hated his pen. If i left him in there when i come home he was always waiting nervously for me. I came home one day and the pen was a different shape than how i left it and his food and water were every where, he had went mental. Now only a couple of weeks later, he goes in there by himself and chills. When i leave him, i come home and he is still chilled out and not even so bothered to come out.

It just takes time

Hi everyone! I'm back with an update. Fitz is SO MUCH BETTER in his pen now. He really figured out over the past week that his pen is a fun place to be. Sometimes he'll cry for a minute or two when he first goes in, but he settles down very quickly. I've been putting his crate in his pen, so if he wants to take a nap in his crate, he can go right in. Thanks for all of the great advice, everyone! Life has gotten much easier now that he doesn't go berserk in his pen.

I'm glad to read that Fitz is accepting his pen without so much fuss. Being able to safely confine him at times when you cannot watch him will be a crucial asset over the next few months!

Just curious, what age was Leo when he stopped using his pen/crate? And when was he potty trained? Its funny how we start to trust them and see that they are not going to eat the livingroom anymore lol! Still not fully potty trained enough yet tho
