It's Isabel

Hello,

I brought Isabel home today! She is doing well. I wanted to share pictures of Isabel and Cuba and ask what might be a stupid question. How can I tell if Cuba an Isabel are playing are if it is more serious? It looks like Cuba is terrorizing her, but she is holding her own. I worry because she is 2.5 pounds and he's about 12. He pounces and swats at her with his paw, but then I look and he's on his back. Isabel, is being vocal by growling and maybe even nipping. I've never had dogs before and I can't tell play from a more serious problem.

I can't tell you for sure if you are seeing play or something rougher, but what you describe fits what my two do in play. I think if they are both coming back for more, and neither are actually getting hurt, everything is probably fine. Hopefully someone with more experience will comment. I will also say that my two play quite aggressively, and Dusty is very vocal and growls a lot in play, but she has never hurt Indie at all, and Indie seems to love it. They take turns instigating the wrestling matches. Indie will often paw at Dusty, and they pounce on each other all the time.
Both of yours are adorable! I think you'll find that two are fun!

Congratulations! They look adorable.

I don't have any advice as to rough play. I didn't experience it with Benji and Lizzie. He was quie protective of Lizzie. When we brought Lizzie home, Benji and Lizzie hit it off well, but he wanted to play with her all the time. She was exhausted and we had to make sure that she was getting her R &R. I would recommend that she get her space and quiet time away from Cuba.

Best, Poornima

Congratulations! They sure are cute together! I know when Izzy and Doc play you would swear they were going to kill each other. I would think if things weren't going well, you would know it. I'm not sure, but I would think that Isabel would retreat in fear if Cuba was being to rough or mean.

What a cute dog she is. They look adorable together.

You can tell if both dogs are coming back for more. If one of the dogs is running away and not coming back, then that's when you know it's too rough.

She is a just to stinking cute. I think as long as she is not running and hiding behind furniture...she is probably enjoying the play. If her tail is up and wagging, I would think she is happy!!

when we first brought Daisy home

Isabel sure is a cutie. You must be in heaven!

Riki was 10 months and she was 11 weeks, he was 12 pounds, she was about two and a half. He would play with her and I would make him stop because I thought he was being rough, and then I realized she instigated it and jumped right back on him. He did lay on his back and put his belly up and let her jump on him. A couple of times she screamed, and he stopped immediately. He respected her, although I did watch them carefully for the first month.

Here is a video you may have seen before of her first day home with him and my VERY excited daughter.

Hello Esperanita~~Isabel absolutely couldn 't be cuter and the pix with Cuba are wonderful.

I have just gone through this adjustment for the past 6 wks, , bringing home a puppy of 13 wks for my Biscuit, 2 yrs. The puppy, Heath, weighed 6 lbs/ Biscuit 17lbs. Immediately Biscuit played rather roughly with Heath, which Heath seemed to enjoy, but the very first day, Biscuit bit Heath rather badly just below the eye in one of these play-fights. Also, Biscuit did this growling, biting, and play-fighting with Heath obsessively and constantly. The vet warned that because of the difference in size, this play must be supervised.

After 6 wks, Biscuit has finally stopped doing this all the time. When it gets excessive, I shake a Pepsi can filled with change at them, and then they play more calmly. Biscuit's favorite pastime is to take Heath out onto the deck and BANG Heath's head into the glass door as hard as possible. Heath loves it, he is terribly spunky and feisty, but I break it up, for Heath's sake. It is part of the process of their bonding, but the puppy should be protected and given some space from the bigger dog. Also, the puppy will yelp if really getting bitten too hard, and, of course, then you immediately separate them.

Best of luck, it's a lot of work, but will get much easier, and they will love each other!

HAV A GREAT DAY ! ~~AMY & BISCUIT~~
and HEATH-Y, TOO !
