Play with me now!

Fitz is now 12 weeks old and is all-around great. When he's very playful (which is often), he'll often bark to initiate play. Should I respond to this or ignore it? I don't want to deprive him of play time, but I don't want to get him in the habit of barking to get me to do what he wants (he still tries this in the pen sometimes when he wants to be let out, and gets ignored).

Is barking to initiate play something he will grow out of? He seems to have grown out of mouthing at hands, but he'll still nip at clothing. When we walk away and ignore him for a few seconds, he'll bark at us to get us to play.
Any ideas?

I think you have to use some judgement with this, and make sure he DOES get plenty of "play time" with you. OTOH, Havanese puppies can have a problem with "Demand barking". I know, because I and one who went through a period where he was driving me CRAZY with his demand barking… from about 8 months to to two years. I did all the 'Ignore" tactics and he STILL drove me crazy with it.

The good news is that he DID get much better about it, just with maturity. The bad news is, it took a long time. SO with a puppy who is already trying that out at 12 weeks, (Kodi hadn't even found his voice at that age!!! ) I'd be pretty careful not to encourage him with it!

Thanks krandall! I recently noticed that when he starts getting barky, growly, and nippy, it actually means it's time for a nap. For the last few days, as soon as he starts getting too hyper (which is the only time he does his demand barking), I'll put him in his pen and he crawls right into his crate and falls asleep. He's just like a cranky toddler who doesn't realize he's tired!
