I've done a search on this topic but didn't find the answer. Heath's breeder advised I should have him neutered by now. He's about 22wks old, a bit over 5 mos. He is so happy and doing so well, and his potty training is going great finally, that I just don't want to disrupt him. I was thinking of waiting another month, at least. How long should I wait? Thanks in advance.

and HEATH-Y, TOO !

Amy, my vet said they would do Finnegan about 6-7 months. Finnegan is also just over 5 months now.

[I] had Logan done at 6 months, and it did not seem to effect his potty training. I will be having Lucas done soon too - but now you put the bug in my ear - I sure hope it doesnt effect his potty training, cause he has been 100% accident free since he came here.

I did Rico at 6 months. I didn't want him to start any "male" behavior like marking. It worked fine. No probelms.

Quincy was also around 6 months---if your vet advises it now----I'd go for it! The sooner the better.

I think the conventional wisdom is 6 months or later.
I've had 2 males neutered at 3 months and it did not affect their housebreaking at all.
In fact, with the males, I've hardly noticed a difference with the neutering. It didn't seem to faze them. No problems at all.

Now for a girl, the recovery was a bit more problematic, but Cali didn't seem to have any issues with it.
Good luck with your little Heath.

We had Chico done at five and one half months and recovery was fine. He was starting to lift his leg and mark things, like Simone's bed. That has stopped now. It wasn't just the neutering but discipline that happened when he marked.

Amy, why did they recommend so young for neuter? Does Heath have all his adult teeth now?

Edited because I didn't answer your question. I think 6-7 months is a good time, but I always advise my puppy owners to talk to their vet about this and do some of their own research too. 6-7 months old has a dual benefit because any retained baby teeth can be removed at that same time.

Bugsy was almost 7 month when he was neutered. I wouldn't have my dog done before 6 months. jmo
