Puppy Class for Dexter

Puppy class starts beginning of March for 4 weeks. We are so excited about going and learning new techniques and learning how to walk a Havanese on a leash.

I took Dexter out on a neighborwalk and the RLH started! He has a favorite area that he will run like crazy go through a bunch of leaves. I just cannot imagine putting on a short leash for Dexter at times like this. Dexter cannot be off the leash at any time except in the house.

What can I expect out of a puppy class? Dexter knows how to sit, stay, down, but he does not know it under pressure and he sure does not know how to walk on a leash!

Dexter obeys REALLY good when he is working for treats, so at times I do not use treats.

They do the basics that you already know but I think the best part is the socialization.

Being around the other puppies I am looking forward to, maybe if things work out, I will have some play dates!

Linda - so glad Dexter is going out to play with other pups. Be sure you get there early so he can take advantage of the playtime. The classes are great for getting grounded in the key actions - leash walking, sit, recall. It is tough to get a small puppy into a solid stay, but the many distractions in the class are a great test environment. Especially for recall. I think the best lesson I learned was to use a happy voice, especially when calling your dog. Why would he come to you if you were yelling!? Doh!

Have fun. Puppy class rocks!

My puppy class also had a once a week puppy happy hour from 6-7:30. You could bring your puppy for $5. Only pups who were registered could come - so they knew about shots etc. Lola just blossomed in those settings. And it was fun to meet the other parents.

Puppy classes are so much fun and I think you will be surprised how much more you need to train when you are out v. at home. But make sure it is about great socialization as well!

Oh.....I hope you have a great time. I am checking into puppy classes as well now that our puppy shots are done with. Evye does sit, stay, down, roll over, and a very poor leave-it, drop-it...all for treats of course. I wish you well and hope Dexter does well.

Oh...................Evye can do a roll over! I am soooooooooooooooooo jealous! How did you teach her? Dexter is so hyper and when I am trying to teaching by touching him to flip, he backs away frequently as if by playing. Any hints on teaching a roll-over?

It sounds as if your Dexter is on the same schedule as our Toby. We started puppy classes last Thursday and it was amazing to see how his personality changed among other dogs. When Toby is with Casey, he is incredibly active and wants to always play. When we got to the puppy class, he was the smallest. They were either German Shepards, Standard poodles or Golden Retrievers. He became very reserved. The teacher had "Toby Time" when all of the big dogs needed to stay in the laps of their owners and Toby could play around. All he did was sit down and put his head in someone's lap...

I can't wait. I have been calling around talking to different places. I notice a big difference even indoors and outside. She listens much better inside than out so I can see where training with distractions are so important. Haven't found a place yet that offers the social hour...that is a great idea.
