Doggie Day Care

So this is the week my new little best friend will be born. Suspense is killing me!! Kathy said to expect an email tomorrow or Thursday. YAY!!

But wanted to get everyone's thoughts on doggie day care. Have any of you used a similar service? This new place will be opening right by me and I thought this would be a great place for socialization once a week.

Here's the link if anyone wants to take a look, looks like a pretty neat place.

Congratulations!!!

I used a Doggie Day Care for Cody when I first got him and he loved it. He did get hurt one day - a bite from another dog that cut his face near his eye. The vet told me that was not that unusual - similar to a child getting a cut or bruise at daycare. I'm sure others will offer advice but you shouldn't take your puppy to a Day Care until after he/she has had all of his/her shots.

Since I'm in Royal Oak, we'll definitely have to schedule a playdate!

Lola goes to doggie daycare one day a week so she will be exhausted for when I am out at class that night. She LOVES it. Her place has a small dog group and they are so darn cute to watch. After puppy class, I found day care to be a critical part of Lola's socialization. They required an interview to meet her to be sure she was healthy and social enough to handle the gang.

They have agility stuff, toys, balls, etc. There is also a roof grass playground that the little dogs use most of the nice days. They have lots of beds in the room and the dogs will nap during the day. Lola often naps in one of the counselors' laps. They give a report card each day letting us know about elimination, energy, etc. "Counselors" is a nice term. Best I can tell they mostly clean up pee and poop. They will feed your puppy if she is still on a mid-day feeding.

I asked the woman who runs it why she doesn't have internet cameras so we can watch at work and she said people freak out if they see that their dog might eat poop. Which many of them do before the counselors can pick it up. I am sure Lola has had a feast or two there.

Once Lola's eye got scratched, but it wasn't bloodshot, just blinking and kinda closed. It cleared up in a day, so not to worry.

Go visit without your dog, see the group in action, get a feel for the place. If it feels good, go for it. If you have any hesitation or bad feelings, though, I would listen to your instaincts on that and stay clear.

Can't wait to see pictures!!!!

I used to buy my dog food at one in Los Angeles and it was very nice and they separated the small and big dogs and had cameras so you can watch and glassed windows so people could watch who were shopping too. I would consider it if it were a place I felt comfortable.

Bella and Fred went to doggy daycare. They don't go anymore because the large dogs scared them. I found they enjoying being home better. I bring in a dog walker for an hour on the days I work.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Anne-this place sounds a lot like the one your Lola goes to. They also do an evaluation beforehand to see how your dog will do in a pack and introduce them slowly. They do have webcams. I think I might start with the puppy classes there and see how I like it. They offer one complimentary visit to see if you like it and feel comfortable.

Jill- a playdate would be fun!

Today or tomorrow should be the big day - I will keep everyone posted!

MacGyver loves daycare. They separate the little dogs from the big ones. They also have boarding, so when he boards he can go play in daycare all day. It makes us feel better that he's busy all day when we have to board him.

Castro is currently registered with 3 doggy day care centers in NYC. All 3 centers have a separate play area for small dogs/puppies; and they allow you to view the pups on webcam.

Cost range from $25 to $45 a day, but totally worth it, since Castro is well taken care of, is exhausted after an entire day and he always gets excited when we walk towards each place...

My favorite, D is for Doggy, has one of the more fun puppy/small dog area; someone is always in the play area, playing with different dogs. they have little puppy furniture, and has a big window to the street. No one walks by without looking into the window full of playing puppies!

I wish I could take Castro there more often, but it can get pretty expensive! My friend pays over $800 a month for his daschund in doggy day care!

That is insane! At that price, I'd just get him a second puppy for a playmate, LOL! I'm kidding, of course... but only partly... you could easily get a second puppy and just get a dogwalker to come in for an hour and that would be so much cheaper! How crazy is that?

Kubrick does go to a daycare near me but only probably once a month or so... just when I'm having a busy day and know I won't be home for a while. I might also enroll Hitch in the day care but I don't see myself using it now that I have two as I only work long hours once a week or so. The rest of the time it's easy for me to come home and check in on them during the day so they're not alone for longer than 5-6 hours.
