Naming a puppy before bringer them home?

I was just wondering if this is normal? My breeder has asked for the show name and "use name" of my puppy, which I will bring home in a couple weeks. He doesn't want it yet (I don't even know if I'm getting a boy or girl yet!) but wants it before I go to pick it up. My problem is that I have a bunch of possible names picked out, and wanted to wait to get to know the puppy better before naming him or her. Has anyone had to deal with naming a puppy before bringing them home? Is it easy to change the name if need be?

Don't fret about it. The breeder is being nice. If you had a name chosen, she would start using it so that the puppy would start to get use to it. Otherwise, she will just keep calling it what she has been calling it all along. We tossed a couple names around for a while and finally chose Jack. I think our breeder called him that for 2 weeks.

You can change the name whenever you want. Puppy doesn't care.

TTFN,
Pam

Ok thanks. This is my first time buying a purebred dog so I wasn't sure how important it was to have it's proper name on the contract when I picked it up!

I had Kodi's name picked out in advance, but then ended up going home with a different puppy thanthe breeder and i originally thought! Kodi learned his name fast, and the other puppy learned his "forever" name, (Jib... He lives on a sail boat!) quickly too.

They have no trouble learning a new name any time in their life.

As for the "official" registered AKC name, the breeder will have some rules about that. There is a certain sequence or way they will want their kennel name to appear on the papers. That is no biggie. Then you get to make up some crazy phrase or name that may have some theme which the breeder does.... or not. It can be fun.

Or if your puppy is just going be your snuggle pet, you don't even have to register with the AKC. It is your choice but why not?

Pam

The breeder had given Teddy a different name that he had for 6 months before we got him. We didn't particularly care for the name and as I've said before, we name our pets after loved ones that have passed on. It took him all of 3 days....tops....to answer to Teddy.

We're also waiting for his AKC transfer papers to get here so we can register him with the name we want. Yes, our breeder contract says we must use the breeder name as the prefix with the AKC...we don't have a problem with that at all. His registered name is going to be unique to our family.

Have a SUPER-DUPER day,
Bette aka Teddy's Mommy

I have found that with the many fosters for HRI that I have had, that they do adjust to a new name fairly easily - but, with that being said, when I have a puppy buyer, I do ask if they have a "call" name for the puppy. If they do, I start calling the puppy by that name, and I do think that they "get it" . But it is not that big a deal if you dont know right away

I decided on Leo's name a couple weeks before bringing him home and his breeder started using it. When I got there to pick him up I called "Leo come" and he came running over to me. It tickled me to no end!

This has nothing to do with puppies, but my trainer says that she encourages people who do rescue to change the dog's name, as the old name often has bad associations for the dog.
