Update on our Awesome Benny!

We've had Benny for 11 days now, and I don't know how i've ever lived without him! We took him to his vet on Saturday and he did great there though he was pooped the rest of the day! He weighed 6.5 pounds at 12 weeks old and the vet, as well as our breeder suspect him to end up around 15 pounds.

Benny has had an appetite since we brought him home, and that has not changed. He has quickly caught on to sit and stay and his name.

We were working on training him to go on a UgoDog since we live in an apartment, and we were just about to give up on indoor training on Sunday when all of a sudden, Benny went off on his own to the pad and did his business on there! Since then, he's been constant, and hasn't had a single accident! I'm pretty impressed! It's like something clicked and he just got it!

Benny sleeps through the night in his crate in our room. He gets up when we get up so that's a plus.

We've left him alone on short occasions to see how he does and he's been getting much better. I think he cries for a few minutes and then goes to laying on his doggy bed.

We're still working on not biting, but he gets so riled up and excited, that he can't help himself and he's earned some time outs for that. He also barks from excitement and I hope we could get that down quite a bit. I posted about his crazy dog runs around the house, and I think he's gotten more agile. Less knocking his head into our walls.

The funniest quirk he has is apparently his OCD. He HATES when things aren't where they shouldn't be. My husband comes home with his briefcase and puts it down on the ground. Benny barks until it's removed from the floor. I had a glass of water on our coffee table, Benny didn't love that too much either lol. I kind of like that though, since i'm a neat freak, it only makes my husband do as he's told by someone other than me!

Now that we've mostly successfully potty trained Benny, it's been a lot more enjoyable. I really love this pup, and he's just a wonderful addition into our lives! Here's some pictures for good measure!

I am so glad Benny is such a wonderful addition to your family. What a sweetie. Our Ollie also weighed 6.5 lbs. at 12 weeks I am glad to hear someone else has a little porker boy. We have the same issues you have as well with the nipping and barking. I am getting a bit more serious about correcting those issues. I have found holding his hair on either side of his mouth and shaking a little and using the words gentle or quiet is helping. I had read somewhere a long time ago that is what the mother would do to correct behaviour with their litters.

Go Benny! You're a very cute little fellow. They are very perceptive little creatures. Keep in mind that reacting to his barking in a favorable way, if he's is barking at something he want's moved, might make him a bossy barker, trust me you don't want that! I went through a bit of that with Tim, and still do sometimes, and then he doesn't get what he wants until he quiets down. It's okay to give me a signal bark but continuous bossy barking is one of my pet peeves. He caught on to a "Quiet" command very quickly and I also put my finger up to my mouth for a hand cue and that's been a blessing, definitely something I suggest being taught along with the classic "sit, down and stay."
