Rambo won't use his litter box

Rambo has been home for 3 weeks. He still pees about every 5 to 10 minutes and will not go near his litter box. Sometimes he will go beside it, but usually not near it. He has one in his ex pen and one in the kitchen where he is with me. I still catch him most of the time. I spoke to Pam, the breeder, about his constant peeing and she suggested putting him in the pen every 5 minutes, wait for him to go, then take him out etc. I tried that but he would not go in the pen after I sat with him for a long while.I worked yesterday from 1 to 5:30 and he didn't go at all .He sleeps in his crate at night from 11 to 7 and has never had an accident in there.
I thought maybe his litter box was too small so I got a larger one, but he still won't go near it.
I feel like he should have made some progress by now.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Benny has been trained to go on a UgoDog, and it was pretty hard to get him used to it, until it just clicked in his head. It took a lot of time and perseverance to get him to continuously use it. I mostly didn't let Benny out of my sight for the first week. I kept putting him on it and waiting until he went. There were lots of accidents. It was like he would wait until I looked away for just one second to go to the bathroom elsewhere.

I would put him on it so often, that I think the scent of his pee made him go on the pad. Pooping was another issue and he would really try to get away from us to go. Only one week in on training and I was frustrated that he just wasn't getting it, and he was ruining the carpets (luckily this is a rental lol). He seemed to be much happier to go outside when we went out for a walk. It was late Sunday night and I was on the phone with my mom telling her how I think we're going to give up on the indoor solution even though we live in an apartment building because it's not clicking for him. As I said that, Benny slowly walked over to the UgoDog and started pooping. Can I just tell you, I literally started to whisper to my mom "Oh my god, he's going mom. All by himself. On his pad. He could do it! He could do it!", then made my husband run downstairs (two level apt) and witness it himself.

Since that moment, Benny got it. He goes there consistently. He looks out the floor to ceiling window when he goes lol but he figured it out.

What type of box is Rambo using? Before I could get Benny to use the Ugodog, I put newspapers on top of it because he was more familiar with that feeling, then eventually took them away about 3 days in.

There might be something about your litter boxes that is different and confuses him. Maybe you could email photos to Pam and she might note something.

Yeah, I would ask Pam for more advice. Other than closing the x-pen up until it's only big enough for his bed and the litter box… back to REAL baby stage, until he "gets it", I don't know.

Which litter is he from? I got to visit with (and take pictures of!) both litters when I was there in early May.

Karen, he is from Posh and Blanchi. He was Hatch and I would love to see your pictures.
He is the sweetest little thing, and so smart. When he goes out every 5 or 10 minutes, he goes instantly, but because I take him so often he really doesn't like the outdoors. So he pees and immediately runs back in the house. He has never had a pooping accident, thank goodness.
He does seem to be able to go a little longer now. When he is in his pen he rarely has an accident, even in 2 hours.

Sharon,
Maggie is from Posh and Blanchi, too. She's a 2013 pup and just turned one yr old. She had a hit and miss time with the litter too. If its from Tractor Supply, they changed the formula. I noticed when I got a new bag last month, it's been changed again. Havs are so smart and know something is not the same. I'm on a trip this week, hubby has Maggie until weekend. When I get home on Sunday, I will check the new bag.
Does your other Hav use the litter? Maggie was four months old and went for a two day visit to Pam's while hubby and I were on vacation. Going to the litter box clicked for her while there and seeing the older dogs go in litter. It's been a dream since then. Before visiting Pam's, Maggie would only go outside.
Some pups click faster than others. Maggie was slow but as said before, it will get easier.
I can't wait to see my little girl again...and hubby, too.

I don't remember which puppies were which, except that Nike's were younger, but MUCH fatter. That girl makes MILK! I love Blanchi, though, and Posh is Kodi's dad. You couldn't have a pup from nicer parents.

Is it possible that you are confusing him with all the in-and-out, especially when he's learning the rules in a new home? With Kodi, we concentrated on the litter box to start with, and he just naturally went potty outside if we happened to be out there anyway. We NEVER "worked" on outdoor training… he just gradually and on his own switched to going mostly outside. Then we had to HEAVILY reinforce use of the indoor potty, because we wanted to keep both options open to us.

You can download small files of any of them as-is. If you'd like larger files of one, LMK, and I can give you access.

Hi - I have a boy from Posh and Razzle. Our first puppy used the litter box no problem but Bodi was a constant challenge about it. I do believe it was because we had a different box style than he was use to and they had discontinued those other boxes. As a boy, he just happens to be a big leg lifter, so I think the box wouldn't have worked out long term for us anyway.

I resorted to taking him outside regularly on a leash, so he knew it was potty time and not play time. He was hit and miss for a long time. I'll tell you what finally made it all click: 1) He turned 1 year old, which I think the maturity helped a lot with him 2) We started using a belly band (a snug one). Ever since we switched to the belly band in the house. there have been zero accidents. The band is never wet and he holds it until I take him out. I praised him and used treats initially to get him on track. He has always gone all night with no accidents in his crate, but I also had the problem of him going potty and then 15 minutes later he'd go on the floor.

Maybe the belly band is a solution for you. I also tried tethering him to me before the band, to really have an eye on him, but that just wasn't as effective with him when he was so young.

Best of luck - it will all work out and he's adorable

Hmmm… Kodi doesn't care what kind of wood pellets I use. The only time I had a problem was when, for a short while, I couldn't get wood pellets, and used "dog litter" from Petsmart. That is a compressed newspaper product, and the problem, (I realized later) is that it is TOO absorbent. Rather than falling apart the way wood pellets do when they get wet, they just swell a bit and hold together. So you don't see the pee spots on the surface, when it is easy to scoop them right out.

I was having trouble with him pottying near the litter box, but not in it. I got down to clean up yet another accident, and was HORRIFIED at the strong ammonia smell from the box. No WONDER he didn't want to use it! Changed back to wood pellets and no more problem. I've never smelled ANY smell with the wood pellets.

The pictures are great, Karen. Love those little puppies. Who is the Kodi look alike with him near the sliders? Is it his mom, Razzle? Whoever it is, s/he looks like a smaller version of him. Thanks for sharing and giving us all our puppy fix.
