Question I think I have the hungriest Hav puppy in the world!!!

Duncan eats Merrick dry food and he get anywhere from 1/4-1/2 cup 3 times a day.Not only does he gobble up his food in seconds but he always seems hungry.
I called the food manufacturer and asked him how much puppies his size should be eating and they told me a total of 1 & 1/2 cups per day and that's right about where Duncan is now.
Do I increase his amount of food??He also poops 3 times a day and he gets treats during the day.He is an active puppy and must burn it off very fast.I will be asking the vet about this next visit, but since I value the opinions on this forum, what do you all think??

I have had a similar problem with my guys. They always seem hungry and gobble their food so fast it makes your head spin
My vet did NOT recommend feeding more, as they will get fat - which Lily did cause we gave in to her whining for food. I would think that if you are giving the right amount - plus treats thru the day - then he should be fine. Mine have always eaten fast & will never turn away food and are healthy guys!

Dot, can you feel Duncan's ribs? Are they boney? If so, he probably needs more food. If he has no "waist", and you can't feel his ribs, he is probably being overfed.

On your next vet visit, be sure to ask them to show you how to tell if he is getting enough food. They can show you exactly how to feel his ribs and his "waist" to see if he is getting too lean or too chubby.

thanks for the replies all!!I can feel his ribs but he does look chunky!
Thanks for the point about asking the vet how and where to feel to make sure he is not over/under fed.
You guys are the best!!

That amount of food sounds about right, Gucci eats about 1 cup a day, half dry and 1/2 wet and is a normal, healthy weight for her age. I do treat her too, so she gets cals there.....I was worried for awhile that she was getting chunky, but then she had a growth spurt and grew lengthwise, so she looks well proportioned now.

Let us know what your vet says

I am so jealous of you Hav owners who have dogs with healthy appetites. Although they are both eaating consistantly now but still If I am lucky they eat about 1/2 a cup a day. they are both healthy so I'm not too worried anymore- but I used to worry a lot.
