Hello! Havanese or Shavanese???

Hi! I am so glad I found this group. We bought what we thought was a Havanese but what we now think is a Shavanese. I have to admit I was disappointed. We wanted the long hair look since our 11 year old son is cancer survivor and still has immune system issues and the long hair is good for allergies (part of his immune system issues are recurring hives). I figured as soon as I figure out how to post some pics I will. I am learning Shavanese are hard to find so I am anxious to post some pics to see what you think. Her name was Havana when we thought she was a long haired but my daughter changed it to London but I am not sure if that will stick either lol. She is SUPER cute and sweet. She is also pretty funny to watch. She is loveable but loves to play when you put her down. I have a crate training question. She of course wants to sleep with one of us. Did you crate train? How old was your baby when you started the process? Since she is so small do you recommend a couple of hours in the day? Do we wait to crate train at night until she is older? 'London' is 9 weeks. Thanks so very much!

I started crate training from day 1. If you plan on your dog sleeping in a crate at night it is important to get them used to that right off the bat. I have the crate in my bedroom and it is covered on three sides to make it more den-like. Having it next to the bed worked out great for hearing her in case she had to go potty as well as sticking my fingers through the bars to comfort her during the night if needed. I used the crate to potty train also so my girl spent a lot of time in there during the day until she was trained. It is important to give them alone time in there during the day so they get used to you leaving and coming back. You don’t want to end up with a dog that has separation anxiety every time you leave them alone. Good luck with your new puppy!

P.S. I forgot to say that I have a second crate in the main living area of my home also.

I had to turn the photo to get a better look at her. What a cutie pie! (Editing to add that I thought London would be the first picture below, but she's the last . . .)

At first I thought maybe a Shavanese was a Shih-tzu combined with Havanese, but then I googled it and found this link:

Shavanese

I'll let someone else address the allergies question. (Wouldn't short hair on the Havanese be the same as long hair as far as allergies go? My DH doesn't have an allergic reaction to Shama even though he reacts to almost every other breed of dog, including the so-called hypoallergenic breeds, but my 14 year-old niece has an allergic reaction to Shama!)

There are many threads about crate training on the forum. I would just suggest you decide where your dog will sleep and have her sleep there consistently from this point forward. Shama slept in her crate in the dining room for two nights (?) and then within her ex pen (open crate inside) in the dining room thereafter. Whenever we travel, we bring her ex pen with us, so it's the only place she's slept since she was tiny. We camped in our living room the first few nights we had her, but then we relocated to our bedroom. She's always been a great sleeper!

Good luck! Please post more photos, and let us know what happens!

PS If your kids want to see pictures of Shama from her puppyhood until now, they should just click on my username and look through my threads! Below are pictures of Shama from seven weeks (at the breeder's house), nine and a half weeks (when we brought her home), and today (two and a half years).

I've never heard of a Shavanese-I also thought it was a Shih-tzu/Havanese. She is adorable! I also recommend crate training from day 1. I made the mistake of starting off getting Rory used to an exercise play pen attached to the crate but he somehow confused the crate as a potty place. The ex pen is now completely separate from the crate. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply Molly120123 I knew I was being a bad mommy with the crate ugh. She is just so small hahaha. We will have to get on it though because you are right she can't go EVERYWHERE with us. Thanks so much

Sorry about the angle. It took me a while to even figure out how to post a pic. lol It is so hard to tell what she is. There are not many puppy pics of the short haired so I guess we will just have to wait and she how she will turn out. Her AKC paper work says Havanese but I am not sure if it would say anything different. All we do is take pics of her she is so funny. lol

I think you will notice that the Havanese puppies have much longer hair, especially on the head and face, than what your little girl has. She does look like a short haired Havanese to me. She is absolutely adorable!

Welcome to the forum, your new pup is adorable! We donít see many Shavanese here but there has been at least one IIRC. Did your breeder not know she was short haired? It seems as if that part came as a surprise to you. I love their long coats but you will enjoy not having the huge grooming bills lol.

A "Shavanese" is still 100% HAVANESE. They just have two copies of the shot haired gene that is floating around in some lines. Very few actually get bred anymore, because it is easy to test for the gene, and as long as you don't breed a carrier to another carrier, you don't produce short haired puppies. They were more common before there was an easy test. Then a breeder wouldn't know for sure if a dog was a carrier unless it produced a short haired puppy.

The breeder SHOULD have been able to tell this wasn't a "normal" haired Havanese unless they were very inexperienced. That said, she's still absolutely adorable! I think short hair Havanese (sometimes also called "satin") are as cute as can be. They remind me of Papillons with a little longer back.

Unfortunately, if a person has dog allergies, they re much more likely to be allergic to a short haired Havvie, whose coat is more like a "normal" dog coat, and will also shed out twice a year. They also tend to have a little more "doggie" small than regular coated Havanese do, from what I've been told.

But they are still pure bred Havanese, not a cross, and have many of the great Havanese characteristics. In fact, a lot of agility people LOVE them because they have all the great training characteristics of a regular Havanese, without all the coat care. I HOPE your son does not react to her, and you get to enjoy her for a long time to come!!!
