Yet another Intro Thread :)

Hi!
I'm just dipping my toes in here as we are exploring the Havanese breed. I'm definitely more of a large dog person (at one point I was looking at newfies for our next dog...), but circumstances have made me look at small dogs.

I live with my hubby, soon-to-be-6 yr old daughter, and my 20 yr old kitty. I work from home and in September the kiddo will be in school full time in grade 1, so I have a feeling that I will be feeling a little lonely and lost.

We had to put our Wheaten Terrier down about a month ago and even though I have my kitty snuggling me, my husband says I have a puppy-sized hole in my heart and he's not wrong. Because there are few breeders in Canada (and most way too far away), I've already started looking and trying to get waitlisted on a breeder in Alberta. We shall see if we get "approved" to the waitlist (from her website, it looks like we would be looking at a litter next year, but she hasn't responded yet so not sure). If that doesn't work, I'd probably start looking at BC or down through the western US.

Because our wheatie was fear-reactive, my daughter is somewhat scared of dogs (we managed his triggers for 8 years, but it still left a mark), so I knew our next dog would have to be insanely friendly. My kiddo was vehemently against getting another dog until she met her friend's miniature dachshund and absolutely fell in love with it and decided she would love to have a small dog. So here we are... and after looking at Havanese being one of the more sturdy small breeds, friendly disposition, energy levels that match our house (we are used to a wheatie high energy athletic crazy dog, so there will still be SOME adjustment), and I don't think I'd be as worried about accidentally squishing them underfoot like I would with something like a yorkie.

So basically I'm just here to read a lot, learn, and make sure that this breed would work for us, and trying not to obsess over the fact that the breeder hasn't responded (I know not everyone is online 24/7 like I am.. lol).

We’ve been looking at Seda Havanese. I did hear back from her and we will be filling out her long form questionnaire and go from there.

You never know!!! Especially since at this point we aren’t even guaranteed a puppy from this. 🙂

It is tough here. Not a lot of breeders in Canada. My Oliver came from a very reputable breeder right here in Cochrane. She is very thorough in here breeding and Ollie’s brother was #1 Havanese in Canada for 2018. She lost her husband late last year though and I don’t think she is doing any breeding at this time. I have heard good things about Seda too, so good luck.

I'll admit I looked up the 2 kennels you show in your signature.
But yeah, I saw that Ollie's breeder is labelled as "permanently closed" on google and their facebook hasn't been posted on since March of last year - but with her losing her husband, that makes a lot of sense
I'll see what happens with Seda first, and if not then I'll probably start looking at US breeders.
