Greetings from a New Havanese Mama!

Good Morning Everyone - After having to put down out 17.5 year old Peekapoo (Bandit) last fall, we have recently bought a Havanese, Bear. I have seen these breeds over the last few years from time to time and they really resembled my Bandit. I'll have to upload pics as soon as I can figure out how to make it smaller. We absolutely adore him. Bear is close to 4 months old now.

It's been a while since I've had a puppy around the house, so I'm looking forward to this forum!

2nd Post - Gender opinion...

I have a question. I'm not sure if I am posting this question in the right location, so someone, please let me know if I need to do this a different way:

We've only ever had our one dog before we got our new Havanese, Bear. I am planning on getting a second soon since these guys are known as pack dogs, from what I have found. Bear is a male. Do males get along better with other male or female Havanese? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Our previous 17.5 yr old was also a male, so I am thinking of getting another male Havanese to be Bear's buddy.

Thanks!

I can't help much with your question about gender. I hope someone notices your post as there are several members with multiple havies. I have been tempted to get a second but so far Willow is a handful!

You might start a new thread with your question as part of the title.

Welcome, just so you know your question posted here doesnít count as a second post. You have to do a brand new one. I know it is confusing, it is designed to deter scammers. To your question, I have two males and they get along great. I chose another male because our first guy is really laid back and tends to let other dogs grab all the attention when they are around. He is super easy going. I thought there was less of a chance of the puppy becoming dominant if it were male. I wanted the older dog to have his #1 ranking so to speak. As it turned out, it worked for me. The young one is way more energetic and boisterous, but he does not dominate the older one, in fact Oliver, the older one stepped up and showed Quincy he is in charge. He would correct his behaviour if it got out of hand as a puppy and Quincy learned what behaviour was ok and what was not. I allowed Oliver to growl at him when necessary and the puppy caught on. They are great buddies now. Oliver is 5 and Quincy is 1.

The new pup that we are supposed to be getting is very laid back. I didn't want them to be very far apart in age though. So did your younger Oliver sort of show Quincy out the door for potty training too?

We hadnít planned on such an age separation either so when Ollie was 2 we adopted Hershey a chocolate Hav. We sadly lost him to cancer at 18 months. Oliver and Hersh were good buddies and Ollie took the loss hard as did we. After some time we got Quince, that is why there is a 4 year gap. The potty training thing I really canít say as I am at home all the time and keep my dogs on a pretty set schedule. They have all potty trained quite quickly and I think it is because I am home and retired and I was able to be on top of it and give them my full attention.
