I wonder how many owners drive up to 5 or 6 hours one way to leave their dog with their commercial breeder when they go on vacation.
Not many I would guess unless they were offered that type of wonderful vacation service, then many of those crazy in-love Havanese owners would likely drive that distance. I drove that distance one way - twice - to first visit and check out the breeder and then drove back months later to pick up a puppy after getting references, one of which was from the local AKC rep. Tom, I know you have a wonderful breeding program and produce top of the line Havanese. I'm sure you have a long waiting list for your puppies.
My problem at the beginning of this thread is when Reputable breeders who sell routinely sell puppies for profit are called Puppy Mills.
This is an extremely, damaging derogatory description of persons who take care of their dogs, do health screenings, provide health guarantees, etc and provide good, healthy AKC limited/registered puppies to people who want a pet. I've called breeders who are in the business of selling puppies for profit ... commercial breeders for lack of a better term.
My puppy is one of those adorable and beautiful dogs who came from a Reputable commercial breeder, like many Havanese. Patti meets all the conformations, doesn't have crooked legs, allergies, has gorgeous hair, comes when called, hikes with us in the Colorado Rockies, loves and plays with the grand kids, plays fetch, is calm and loving. If I'd gotten a full AKC registration she would probably make a good Show Dog, which I'm not interested in. Her mama had been shown.
My point was this.... IMO
..... There's room from other reputable commercial breeders, in addition, to specialized breeders such as yourself. I understand and support Havanese Groups who want to protect the breed and I have no doubt this group vehemently disagree's with my opinion. Dogs produce a lot of emotion and strong opinions.
People should be diligent about the puppies they buy, not support bad breeders and worst yet puppy mills.
