Very good question.

Or coming down to camp in the yard or visit with them around a bonfire?

Or call them when something goes wrong?

Or call them when something wonderful happens?

Not many I would guess unless they were offered that type of wonderful vacation service, then many of those crazy in-love Havanese owners would likely drive that distance. I drove that distance one way - twice - to first visit and check out the breeder and then drove back months later to pick up a puppy after getting references, one of which was from the local AKC rep. Tom, I know you have a wonderful breeding program and produce top of the line Havanese. I'm sure you have a long waiting list for your puppies.

My problem at the beginning of this thread is when Reputable breeders who sell routinely sell puppies for profit are called Puppy Mills.

This is an extremely, damaging derogatory description of persons who take care of their dogs, do health screenings, provide health guarantees, etc and provide good, healthy AKC limited/registered puppies to people who want a pet. I've called breeders who are in the business of selling puppies for profit ... commercial breeders for lack of a better term.

My puppy is one of those adorable and beautiful dogs who came from a Reputable commercial breeder, like many Havanese. Patti meets all the conformations, doesn't have crooked legs, allergies, has gorgeous hair, comes when called, hikes with us in the Colorado Rockies, loves and plays with the grand kids, plays fetch, is calm and loving. If I'd gotten a full AKC registration she would probably make a good Show Dog, which I'm not interested in. Her mama had been shown.

My point was this.... IMO ..... There's room from other reputable commercial breeders, in addition, to specialized breeders such as yourself. I understand and support Havanese Groups who want to protect the breed and I have no doubt this group vehemently disagree's with my opinion. Dogs produce a lot of emotion and strong opinions.

People should be diligent about the puppies they buy, not support bad breeders and worst yet puppy mills.

Karen - maybe you can solve my question. When I went to the link you provided only one Breeder of Merit came up in Washington state. When I went to the Marketplace link Mikki provided, a different Breeder of Merit popped up in Washington using Mikki's link. So, I'm wondering if you know why the marketplace lists a Breeder of Merit but the AKC link doesn't. I understand that the marketplace is not endorsed by the AKC. The AKC also has a disclaimer at the bottom of the marketplace page indicating the same.

There is a list of Breeders of Merit you can Click Search and it brings up 477 names and lists the types of dogs they breed. Or, put in a state.

Breeders of Merit can advertise on the Marketplace ... it's an option any of them can use if they want to advertise on the AKC website.

Interesting web site ...

I should have been more clear in my question. Sorry. I meant exclusively Breeder of Merit for Havanese. Even though the AKC link lists numerous Breeders of Merit in Washington there is only one Havanese breeder in Washington and it's not the same one as listed for Havanese on the Marketplace link. Just odd to me.

Not sure. That's something you could either email or call AKC and ask, though. They have people in the office on weekdays, and will answer questions! (the website is well known for being less than totally user-friendly!)

Thumbs up Havanese vs. Maltese

I lost my wonderful 16 year old male maltese this Spring and now have a female Havanese. I did not plan on another puppy so soon. However, my groomer told me I may enjoy a Havanese when ready and mentioned a very professional Havanese breeder in southern Maine. When they breed each puppy is loved and handled with care until ready for placement. I contacted them to place my name on their wait list. They were extremely kind and caring and an unexpected opportunity allowed me to obtain a sweet, lovable puppy. She is now 3 1/2 months old and the love of my life! I have noticed she is a fast learner and easier to train than my maltese (I've had 2 male Maltese dogs). She wants to please and also be included in whatever is happening. Yet, when I place her in an exercise pen she quickly settles down while I do chores or run short errands. I lived many years loving the Maltese males but am already thrilled about switching to a beautiful, sweet natured female Havanese. I highly recommend them!!

Would you be willing to share the breeders name? I live in New York and have just started my research.
