Black Puppy with lighter roots?

I have my first Havanese puppy. He is a little black boy named Bertie, age 13 weeks. Though I did my best to find a good breeder, visited breeder, assured of good first check-up and parents cleared for knees and eyes he has an overbite and needs surgery to remove his lower deciduous canines and then will likely need his permanent ones filed down and root canals. So sorry for the wee baby.
He will get the best care I can get for him. The breeder disagrees with my vet's plan and his vet did not find the problem. Loki's mum has kindly told me about his experiences with his overbite.
He is a very happy and adventurous beastie.
I have a question about black Havanese though. I see that there is a distinct line in his hair, similar to regrowth after a "dye job". The ends are jet black and the new fur all over his body is a lighter black with a brownish tinge.
Has anyone else ever seen this with a black puppy? I am feeding a very high-quality diet but still worry that he is missing something. The colour change could have started with weaning as it is half the length of his fur.

I was so pleased to find this site, I have so many other questions. I will need to find my way around the threads. Thank you all for being there, Lauren (aka Planti)

Even in "the best of families" in ALL breeds of dogs, but especially toy breed dogs, there are sometimes problems with mouths. It just plain happens. It doesn't mean that your breeder is not a good breeder. I'm sorry that your breeder won't at least help you out, though. That is disappointing.

As far as the color is concerned, I am SURE it's not a dietary problem. Havanese change color. It's what they do! Does he have rings of lighter hair around his eyes? If so, my guess is that he his a silver. (like a silver Poodle) If not, he STILL might be a silver, but silvering later, and not as dramatically as some. If not, he could be a "fading black" which ends up being sort of a charcoal grey as they mature. Whatever color he ends up, I'm sure he will be adorable!

Hi and thanks, yes I understand that mouth problems can be genetic or sporadic so not looking to lay blame. The overbite issue is newly diagnosed and my health guarantee excludes dentition so I have not asked for help but neither has it been ruled out. The breeder hopes it will go away but my vet is concerned that the teeth are causing pain, poking into the hard palate.
As long as it is not due to a deficiency he can be purple and I will love him to bits. Just have to learn how not to spoil him. I already know how to come when he rings the bell!

Had to swallow some coffee before figuring out how to upload a picture. Your pups are awfully photogenic!
