Hi, all! I'm mostly creating this thread to become eligible to post in other threads, but I did want to give those who might be interested (especially first time Havi/puppy owners) an update about those pesky puppy blues. When I posted my first "intro" post here I asked a couple potty training questions and although my focus in the post was only about potty training, in real life, I was actually really struggling with puppy blues! I've raised one other puppy to doghood on my own, a very high energy pitbull girl. She was a rescue that found me and was a breeze in all things puppy raising--I got lucky for sure! When getting my Havi I did all the research I possibly could for at least a year prior to even fully deciding on getting a puppy so I felt like I had walked myself through most worst case scenario situations, including disastrous potty training attempts, before Suji joined my life. I'm sure it was all a mix of lack of sleep, adjusting to a new life being a part of mine, and frantically trying to make everything go right that caused me to experience more puppy blues than I had previously. Even two weeks in I was still really wondering if I had made the best decision in getting a new puppy--I was so far deep in those puppy blues that I was very seriously reconsidering the idea of EVER having my own human children...HAHA!!! I felt like as if I done all the right things and made the most well-informed decision but nothing was going right! In truth, everything was running so smoothly and my puppy was (& still is) the most patient with me in learning how to be her mom. I just had to take a step back and see the bigger picture. I want anyone who may be experiencing puppy blues or may possibly experience them in the future to know that if you've made an informed decision about getting a puppy and you are working to create the best life for your new fur baby, the puppy blues DOES go away and you will look at your puppy and thank the good puppy gods that they sent you the little angel that you have. I couldn't have asked for a better Suji and I am so happy she is mine! (Even when she talks back when she's told to do something she doesn't want to do! LOL!)

I sure understand your angst! Clementina is my first puppy in 35 years! Oh how much I had forgotten. I forgot the getting up in the middle of the night to take her out. I watching her all the time to notice her movements that say "I need to pee" Of dogproofing the house....Of getting her shots...thankful that all vets her in Mexico come to your home at no extra charge...But we have made it through the first 8 months and I'm past the puppy blues and are used to having a dog in my life. Now all I have to do is to convince her that she is not a cat but a DOG!

I can relate to Puppy Blues. Mine was 10 months old and this was his 3rd. home after being returned to the breeder twice. He was the sweetest natured boy but times were tough for a couple months. He had a lot to learn. He's 2.5 now and everything is great. He still gets very carsick and hates to be alone. But even those things are getting better. He was my first Havanese but my 5th. dog. My previous dog was a similar age but lived with a professional handler. He was a very easy dog. I "thought" Shadow would be the same, I was wrong!!!
Things do work out for the best usually and I am thrilled with Shadow after a rough start.
Your girl is beautiful, Shadow & I wish you many great years together!
Thanks for sharing your puppy blues tale!

What a wonderful post! I think most people, at least most first time pet people, occasionally think "What the HECK have I gotten myself into?!?!" during those first few weeks! It IS like having an infant in the house... except it's an infant with teeth that is harder to keep contained than a human infant! LOL!

But the vast majority of us get through it, and come to realize that those first few weeks of torture are well worth the following 15 years of a wonderful companion and family member! There's a good reason that puppies are so darned cute... otherwise we'd drown them all! LOL!

Great post! I try to always tell new owners that it does get better and better, but those first months are really demanding, exhausting etc. even for those of us who have raised puppies before, we tend to forget how much work a new puppy may be. And Havanese are so smart and personable, they require a lot of attention but before you know it, they are grown up or almost grown up and are wonderful companions.

Thank you for your honesty and perspective. I can so very much relate to your experience of puppy blues. My second Hav, Teddy, who is now ten months old, has been a particular challenge. I thought I was a seasoned Hav mama after having a relatively easy time with my first hav. Teddy had severe car sickness and was also a poo-eater. Over time and intense attention to these issues, they have both resolved (whew!). But for months, I was wondering what I had gotten myself into. Because I wanted to wait until a year to neuter for health benefits, Teddy began marking everywhere in the house at 8.5 months. He was neutered several weeks later and fortunately, that resolved as well (whew! again!). Teddy is sweet as sugar mixed with mister mischievous. He keeps me laughing and is also a little lovebug. But yes, I think sometimes the more challenges we endure with them, the closer the bond. It is difficult to remember this in those moments of puppy craziness. Thank you again for the post :)
