I’m Molly, and I’ve had my 9 week old Hav puppy Hashtag (Hashie) for two days. She’s so small compared with my Labs of yore. My only potential issue is that she cries when I leave the room, though my home is still new to her. It’s hard not to go to comfort her but I want to train her, not have her train me. (She does stop crying after a little while.) She’s smart and spunky, but so far she’s not as hyper as most puppies I’ve seen (typical Havanese.)

It is very wise of you not to give in to her pleas for you to come back. It’s very important for her to learn to self-sooth and be independent part of the time, even though you ALSO want her you be your loving companion! It is best for BOTH of you!

Sometimes Havanese puppies are a little quiet when they are VERY young, and become more rambunctious when they hit 16-20weeks! :)

Ignore the cries. Just leave her often for a minute or two as often as you can. Maybe try using the same words, I usually say whenever I leave, "I'll be back soon", very casually. Even if it is for a minute or a couple hours, same words.
Mine was a Velcro dog for a long time. I couldn't leave his sight for a second. He'd cry, then bark and howl. Even if it was me going to the garage for 2 minutes. He'd be at the door. Now he lays in his bed and waits quietly.
The words become like a command like sit.

Thanks to both of you for the encouragement. I feel welcome. Havaneses are "a new breed" for me, even though I did a ton of research before I decided on a Hav. I am thrilled with the little girl I have. I hope she'll be happy too.
Welcome! I am pretty new here myself and you will find all kinds of help and support from the members! Congratulations on your little cutie!

Welcome ! The only other dog we had before Skye came to us was a big guy (125 lbs.). So there are some adjustments to make :laugh2:. These little guys can't carry in the groceries or carry a bucket of gardening tools around the back yard. But they sure can fill a home with love and joy!! One thing I did learn early on is that it helped to get down to his level during when he was so tiny. His early training went much faster when I was down on the floor and not towering over him.

Kindly forgive my messy coffee table. I'm going to have to find some other place for all that paper!
Very shortly!!

Dark puppies are the hardest photography subjects there are. I bought a cheap LED camera light from Amazon that makes all the difference.

Thanks, Chewy. Thanks to all of you. I'm meeting a trainer in a couple of days. Hashi seems pretty calm but I want to avoid separation anxiety developing in her. I've read that it can be a problem with Havs (though she seems pretty calm most of the time.)

I never thought of that, Tom. The photos Ive taken are from my phone. I did invest in a videocam but I have to learn how to use it.
Uh-oh, sometime last night Hashi got up on the sofa where I was sleeping! I awoke to the feeling of her tiny feet walking on my comforter. I thought it would take a while before she would be able to do that! 😬

Here’s a picture I took this morning!

Here's the one I bought. I also have a mount that goes on the camera, but you may be able to handhold it along with the phone. There are probably grips that use a phone. We already had rechargable batteries for it out of an old camcorder. I'm not sure what a battery, and charger would cost.

It's been used for all our puppy pictures for the last few years.

You can't have it on full brightness, or they won't look at you. It doesn't take much to make a difference though. amazon says I bought it four years ago.

Tom, what kind of camera do you use? Other than the one on my phone, I have an old Sony Cybershot. I’m not even sure it works.
Alan, even though I’m just 5’1”, I still feel I’m towering over this tiny dog and my eyesight isn’t the best (need new glasses) to look down and clearly see her anyway. I can’t even tell when she’s sitting, she’s so low to the floor. Crouching down nearer to her helps me connect better with her.
She has a thing for cardboard. I’ve been flattening out Chewy cartons for recycling and she looks in the box of ripped-up cardboard and tries to fish out a piece. Crazy little beast!
I’m still trying to figure out what motivates her. She’s not a big eater and a tried a tiny bit of hot dog but it didn’t seem to knock her socks off.
This is going to be so much fun!

Mine is super food motivated but there are definitely treats he likes better than others. It is really fun when we come across something new that he likes and he gets especially excited and interested.

I have noticed that some things he wasn't interested in he started to like later, and I think some of that is conditioning from all of the praise and excitement along with giving the treat. Which is good because with prepackaged treats I prefer the cookie type treats that don't smell really awful and he was NOT interested in those at first :) I'm glad he came around!

Maybe clicker training.
Mine is so crazy for even a kernel of dog food, he looses his mind! He loves this clucking sound my neighbor makes. He loves this neighbor (who is the owner of his best friend) and obeys every word he says, even if he isn't speaking to him. For example, Andy will tell his dog, Bandit, to potty and Shadow obeys. Or lay down, Shadow lays. It's quite funny.

Current camera is Nikon D5300. I forget how old it is, and haven't kept up with newer models since deciding to get that one.

Before that, we used a Nikon D40 for probably over a decade. The 5300 is noticeably better in all sorts of ways, especially since computers have gotten faster, with larger storage capacities.

Being food motivated makes training Much easier.

Eva, I finally found what she likes - Zuke’s Minis training treats. They can be torn into little bits. and they are chewy, which my Hashi loves. Unfortunately her favorites are the Salmon flavor, which smell ghastly to me. But she will go for the Rabbit flavor too and that’s not so bad.
In the 2 weeks I’ve had here she seems to have gotten more adventurous in her food choices.
Thank you for the feedback!
