Two Havanese puppies-Dante and Luis

We purchased Dante and Luis from a wonderful breeder in Woodstock NY, Peace Love Havanese. They are beautiful but desperately need their first grooming experience. We live in Blue Bell in Montgomery County PA and would like recommendations for groomers in SE PA. One of our pups goes thermal nuclear when we try to just bathe him. The University of PA Vet Clinic told us there are "fright free" groomers that are experienced working with scared dogs. Finding one would be ideal if anyone knows of any in this area. However, a good groomer of Havanese pups would probably know how to handle him. Thanks we are really desperate.

Welcome to the forum!

Are your puppies littermates? How old are they? Can you post any photos?

Sorry I cannot offer any groomer recommendations.

What about your puppies "desperately" requires grooming? I think when we first took Shama to her groomer, all she got was a brush out, bath, and blow dry.

You may wish to contact your local Havanese Clubs:
Delaware Valley Havanese Club
Greater New York Havanese Club

Good luck!

PS I put the links to the clubs, but then I wasn't allowed to post, so I removed them ...

I canít help you out with specific groomers, however one thing I would suggest is for you to do LOTS of handling of their feet, especially the front ones. This may help them to be better receptive to nail trimming which is the thing dogs tend to hate most. It would also be best if you learn to trim nails yourselves. Typically dogs do not go to the groomer often enough to keep their nails short enough. This leads to the quick becoming too long which can cause problems. Better to keep the quick from getting too long in the first place with frequent nail trimmings. You may also want to check out mobile groomers. This could be less stressful.

I would also suggest talking to your breeder about how she handled bathing with your puppies. Presumably, she gave them a bath or two before they left her. Maybe she can tell you what she did to keep it as stress-free for them as possible. Havanese require a lot of bathing, and most people do at least some of those baths at home. It may be that some quiet, early baths at home will be less stressful for him than going to a groomer.
