Hi Everyone! We are anxiously awaiting our new pup, Maggie! She was born 5/19. She is what the breeder called a “rare” red. We’ve been picturing a little cream or apricot Havanese in our minds but we didn’t want to wait for another litter and are exciting to welcome this little girl to our family this summer! Do any of you have red Havanese you could share a picture of?

Well, she is a red sable, not "red", (which I would interpret as "clear red") and I wouldn't say they are "rare". She will have some blac on her face and ears, and sprinkled through her coat. How much of this stays depends on a lot of things, and you won't really know until she is an adult. You also won't really knmow how dark she will stay until she is an adult. It is unlikely that she will fade to cream, but it is VERY possible that you could end up with your apricot Havanese. And I hate breeders using the term, "rare". Havanese come in a HUGE range of colors, and red sable is one of them. They are only rare if you don't have them in your lines. Some lines have nothing much BUT reds and red sables!
. Thank you for sharing all of those pictures! When I asked for more detail about the color she said clear red. But I knew I saw a black on the years and around the nose. I had no idea that was called a stable! Thank you! Your friends pups are gorgeous!
Here are three photos of clear red Havanese. The first is a clear red bitch belonging to a friend with her litter, the second is the sire of that litter, being mugged by one of his puppies, also clear red, though a little lighter. The third is him showing at the Havanese National Specialty a few years ago.
You can see that the coloring of these dogs is significantly different than the red sable girl in my other post (incidentally, owned by the same person) and from your cute little girl. Neither is better or worse, they are just different colors genetically.

I hate to undermine the point that color really doesn't matter by saying, I have an enormous soft spot for Reds like this.
I think it's okay to hope for a particular color, but it's really the least important thing, and making a decision about a puppy based on color can be problematic.
Oh, and the puppy that looks white? he is actually an "extreme red parti". He has red ears and red rings around his eyes. (and a too cute to believe he's real adult! ) You just can't see the red parts with his head buried in mom's side. So he is technically STILL red! LOL!
Spot on, Karen! And the red sable you posted is on the darker end of the sable spectrum. Mario appeared nearly black as a newborn he was such a dark red sable...he has looked nothing but light beige since around a year old I am also very turned off by a breeder referring to ANY color as rare (especially because all it takes is a bit of genetic bottlenecking to make a color more frequent), but especially red sable...we see quite a bit of those!
Right. Sables are a crapshoot... it's really hard to tell which ones are going to hold their color and which ones won't. Some family lines are more reliable about holding color than others, but there are no guarantees. And, yes, Miss Nora is VERY dark... and the fact that she has kept the REALLY dark mask (which ALSO isn't a "given") makes her even more dramatic looking.
Pam and Tom's "Redman" stud (Red) is one of the deepest red sables I've ever seen, and has no mask. So he shows another "expression" of red sable. He is producing a lot of red sables that are staying quite dark... but again, there are no guarantees with Havanese color!
Mine is on the lighter side, but also red. My profile pic shows his coloring when he was a puppy. He’s lightened quite a lot since then and the darkest of the red is around his ears. The only down side of his face lightening as he’s gotten older is I think tear stains show up a bit more. I really didn’t want a white or really light puppy because I was worried about keeping a white dog clean. Turns out, I don’t care at all, and I’d love him no matter what! His entire stomach is white, and he has white markings. The dirt all washes out! Along with sticks, and bits of leaves, and all kinds of interesting things depending on the day.
P.S. You can ALSO see that my friend who has all those red CLEARLY has a soft spot for reds too. So that's OK. The red pair are both retired now, to be beloved household pets, though Tony will now compete in Rally once Covid allows! And Nora, the little red sable girl is young and has not yet finished her health testing. And until that is finished, everyone always holds their breath and crosses their fingers on whether their bitch will be suitable for breeding or not. But she is a darling, and we are all enjoying watching her grow up tremendously. All my dogs definitely enjoy her company!
Genetics and colors in the Havanese are fascinating. I admit I love the reds and also the black and white litters. I will probably end up with a pup that is totally the opposite.:smile2:
It's a strange phenomenon in dogs...you find yourself totally set on one thing, then along comes something else. Brisket was meant to be a sable girl. I wanted a girl, and desperately wanted a pretty red dog. His littermate was a beautiful gold sable girl who was also a show prospect. When it came to eval day, it was between her and Brisket...and despite my attempts to not fall for the bog black and white boy AND despite the stash of "girl puppy" stuff I had accumulated, I chose him. Oops  Best laid plans...
Something I find amazing! . And so much fun to watch! A couple of Tony and Poppy's light ones have become almost Irish Setter red. Redman isn't too far off from that either.
Lol, that is exactly why when I start buying puppy supplies they will be gender-neutral. My specific breeder doesn't inform you which pup will be allocated until 8 weeks and I am a planner. Once I find out that there's a pup in the litter for me, then I'll start purchasing gender-neutral colors.
Welcome, MargaretMarie! I am looking forward to seeing photos of Maggie and hearing about your adventures with her! Karen, can you by chance post a photo of that white puppy you referred to in Post #5 as an adult? As a child, I never imagined I'd one day have a black and white dog. I thought I'd be getting a red minpin like the one I had from age 12 to 27. When we were awaiting Shama, we had three names in mind depending on whether she was black, black and white, or cream/beige/tan. I think that, at the time, I didn't know the names of the colors or that there were more than three color possibilities. Every name option began with "Chamallow" which we were planning to abbreviate "Shama." "Chamallow Doré" and "Chamallow Charbon" didn't end up being her name. "Chamallow Brulé" means burnt marshmallow. Here's a picture of her at 10 weeks old.

You learn something new every day in this forum! Apparently, Shama means obedience in Hebrew!
From pathofobedience.com, Obedience in Hebrew is: shama (שָׁמַע). It means to hear, to listen, to give attention, to understand, to submit to, and to obey. There is only one word in Hebrew for obedience, and it is this word - shama. This Hebrew word is also generally translated as "hear".
I'm going to have to inform Shama that her name means obedience. Maybe she will become more obedient as a result!
Shama is definitely a beauty. I love the black and white! Also the reds
