Older Havs New Forum now open!

The older havs forum is now open for business!

Question, what is the age they are 'older', I know they say that dog years are 7 to every 1 human year, but I think that applies to dogs with shorter life spans..I've always told people that I calculate Gucci to be 4 years to every 1 year(this is something I have made up, lol)..so she is 28 right now in my mind

Thanks for suggesting this, its a great idea! and I love that we have so many grown up beauties here!

Great news! I think dogs age at different rates (even within a single breed) just like people do. So I don't think there needs to be any hard-and-fast rule on ages. But I do know, from a training perspective, even for longer lived smaller breeds, between 8-10 years old you need to start to think about them slowing down a bit and give more consideration to joint health.

One of the venues I compete in (WCR) has a "veteran dog" class. These classes have no jumps and a limited number of sits and downs to lessen wear and tear on older joints.

In my brain (with all its cobwebs), big breeds started to be 'older' when they hit 7-8ish. Little breeds were around 9-10. Of course, it varies. Great Danes - I could never have a Great Dane but the little guys.... YAY! You have to figure 12-15 year lifespan on average, if not more. So, 10 would be a good start for slowing down and enjoying the good life.

Pam

I don't remember any of ours slowing down before 14. Keeper is coming up on 12 or maybe 13-don't remember birth year right off, and he's still like a full grown puppy. Twinkle of course has really slowed down but if she's still with us a couple of more weeks, she'll hit 17-1/2.

Meg is somewhere around 13, and she still has spinning play sessions, and can catch a piece of kibble out of the air even with a poorly thrown toss.

Imme is 14, and still plays a lot, but she's like me, slower to get going in the morning, and harder of hearing.

Too funny! I just looked to see how old Bella was the other day. My guys are coming up on 10,9 and 8. I don't remember the conversion but I do remember one of my boys is 48. Bella is older. They haven't slowed down. I still hike them an hour a day

If you go to the top blue bar that runs across the bottom of the rotating ads, you just hit 'forums' and it will pull up all of the different forums, that's the way I get to a specific one

Thank you, Paula! Unfortunately, creating forums is above my pay grade, but I can nag til' it gets done. lol (kidding! The delay was because everyone seemed to be on vacation last week, I was even out of town for my son's graduation from Virginia Tech /Pre med, momma's proud!!)

This morning, We saw a baby bunny in the back yard and I will tell Gucci "bunny" and she will run over there..all alert in her stance…spot the bunny and proceed to chase it all over the yard (she would never actually catch the bunny or hurt the bunny (never has)..but she will chase it, but this morning, she gave up after about only 10 feet when it ran into the hedges. I thought about this forum and how she would've ran the whole yard 3 times over looking for it back when she was 3, but at age 7, she's more reserved with her bunny chasing adventures, lol.

I just really hope she will be a happy and healthy Senior, I made a lot of decisions regarding waiting to spay her so she could fully develop her bones in order to avoid things such as arthritis, but there are no guarantees in life and health, anything can happen no matter how much you try to set the stage for the production of life.

I know we have some really knowledgeable members on the topic of older havs, like Tom! You will be a wealth of information to people, I'm sure
