Smile A Question for the Older Havs: Supplements

Do any of you give supplements to your furbabies?

I have had Jack on Cosequin or the equivalent since he turned one. This is because he has really bad front legs. The vet is pretty confident that Jack will have arthritis as he gets older.

What other stuff do you to hold off old age? Besides staying active.

TTFN,
Pam

A lot of horse people swear by Cosequin. Pam gives it to Twinkle sometimes.

after Logan's knee surgery (age 7) the specialist wanted him to get Dasuquin. She recommended it for all my older dogs (the girls are 9 & 10).
So all three get a Dasuquin every day.

I give this one to Bella. She had some neck pain and the holistic vet recommended it. She's been taking it for years. She used to yelp from pain. I haven't heard her yelp in years. I also don't walk her as far as the boys. She can handle the long walks, but I notice if she does the entire hour, she will start yelping.

Fred gets Cosequin for his knees. He also has arthritis in them due to his luxating patellas. He had surgery on one of his knees. So far, the other one doesn't need it. I wonder if the Cosequin is helping.

The vet just switched Jack to Dasuquin this month. They aren't carrying Cosequin anymore. A couple of times we ran out over the weekend. By the time I got the refill, Jack was limping a little. It must be doing something.

Poor little guy. Old age is going to be hard on him. He isn't even 4 yet. He will ask us to give him shoulder rubs by doing a nose-touch and positioning his shoulder in a certain way. We knew that he will have problems.

TTFN,
Pam

Kodi gets glucosamine and fish oil… not because of his age or conformation, but because he uses his body harder than a lot of small pet dogs running agility. My vet puts all dogs who run agility on both.

Oh, I forgot about those things. My guys also get coconut oil and a probiotic.

Omega 3 is good for skin and coats.

The only supplement Tyler gets is Cosequin DS. I give him half a tab after his breakfast and half after dinner. He anticipates getting it as though it were dessert after his meals. He's been on this regimen for years after a bit of stiffness when getting up. The stiffness was cured and at almost 17 and post torn ACL, he has absolutely no limping or stiffness even though I was told that he would develop arthritis in his bad leg and would probably have to take Rimadyl for the rest of his life. No Rimadyl and no pain!. That is the only supp he gets and has ever gotten. BTW, his front legs are quite bowed and this has never given him any trouble either in movement or health.
