Good article. I have one thing to add to "How to make our dog's lives better". Let them learn as many words as you can teach them so they really can communicate to us, not just the other way around. Tux astounds us with the phrases and words he comprehends. We try to use the same words to express something to him and he gets it. We know when he's hungry because he comes to us and sits up, and we ask if he's hungry. He responds by trotting over toward the cabinet. He doesn't abuse it. He's really hungry when he asks. He's learned that when he needs something, he sits up whether its affection (we know he's eaten and we are talking and ignoring him and he's gone potty, so affection must the what he wants. We say "Awe, do you want some attention?" and invite him onto our laps. It's the same with potty( if I happen to forget the time). Imagine your life living alone with Chinese who never bother to help you grasp their language. How isolating is that? I tell him to "Go get Mark", and he spins around and gleefully takes his mission seriously. He literally bounces back to me knowing he did a good thing by bringing Mark to where I'm standing. Including all the typical canine commands, he also knows the names of all his toys, let's go night-night, get down, that's not yours, wanna go?, Where's Mark? , It's over there (with a point), There's so and so (a friend, neighbor or another dog) so he learns their names, go around it, get in, and so on.......

I had an Akita who could talk. If she wanted something, she would come to me and go "Wah wah" . If I asked her a question and it was what she wanted she would speak back to me to answer her version of "yes", otherwise she would wait until I said what she was looking for.
