A bad, bad day

This morning DH crashed our car on the way home from work. He's okay, but the car is really, really bad. We are waiting to see if the insurance company will fix or total the car.

To make this day worse, one of our goldens disappeared from our backyard some time this afternoon. She went missing between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. We were all outside to exercise the dogs at 2:30. She stayed outside with two others. At 5:00 DH went out front to get the mail. He turned around and found one of the dogs (Mookie) standing in the driveway, wagging his tail. Mookie rushed to the side gate and stood there, looking back at DH as if to say, "Look! The gate is open!" Then Mookie ran back into the yard. That side gate is rarely used and we're pretty fanatic about making sure it's latched. I can only guess that, somehow, the latch wasn't completely secured the last time we used it and the wind gusts (28-30 mph) today blew the gate open. What I can't believe is that Ginger wandered out. She's so shy and timid. We looked all over the neighborhood but she's no where to be found. Ginger will be 12 yrs in October. I'm making up flyers to post tomorrow. Today totally sucked.

Please keep Ginger in your thoughts.

I know the terror and utter helplessness you feel when they wander away. I'm praying for her safe return. Though it was a terrible, terrible day yesterday, there is much to be thankful for. At least your DH wasn't hurt and your other golden didn't run away.

I'll be checking back all day for updates.

We found Ginger this morning. She's now buried beneath a stand of trees on our acre. She was less than a 1/2 mile from home on a busy cross street. At least someone was kind enough to move her from the road and place her out of further harm's way.

We now have a cable and padlock on that side gate so NOTHING will blow it open again.

I can't believe she's gone. I can't believe she left the yard. She's never been that brave before. It doesn't feel real.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words and thoughts. I wish this had a happy ending.
