We have had some luck with using Rover to identify sitters that look like they might be good based on what they say about themselves, and their reviews, and then met them. We’ve identified two good people this way in the past (though in the East Bay so probably not helpful to you). Then, you can arrange with them whether or not to book through rover. The annoying thing with rover is that they charge you and the sitter/walker a fee, but it does make for easy scheduling and communication, and includes insurance (which we’ve wanted when we have someone come stay at our home). Good luck!
