Dear Diary,

My name is Boo. I am a 20 year old Havanese dog. I know that seems really old. However, age is just a number. I still enjoy cookies, playing my puzzle games, and exploring in my back yard. I even still allow my Dad to take me to the groomer, although I don’t always love the ride.

I do take a lot of different medicines, and sleep about 18-19 hours a day. However, most days, I feel pretty good. I try to enjoy life to the fullest, even though sometimes I get confused or scared. I know my Dad will always take care of me.

Dear Diary,

Today, Dad took me to see my GP doctor to get my 3 year rabies shot, as the county was requiring it. My GP vet and my specialist agreed that it was safe to give me the injection, since I had no history of reactions to vaccines and my medical conditions are stable.

The vet examined me, and gave me the injection. Dad said I was a very good boy at the vet. So, I got extra cookies, when we got home. I have not had any reaction to the injection in the past twelve hours. I know Dad is less worried now.

I am just finishing my dinner now. I will go outside to potty, and spend a little time with Dad before sleeping.

Dear Diary,

Dad was very upset today because it appears that my rabies shot aggravated my IBD, as I had colitis last night with blood in my stool.

Today, my specialist did a lot of work up to rule out any other explanation for the blood. I had ultrasounds, X-rays, and lots of bloodwork. My doctor told Dad that the appearance of my intestinal tract was consistent with enteritis and colitis. However, there was no evidence of carcinoma or other significant changes from 2021 imaging. I have to go back for a blood pressure check in two weeks cause it was mildly elevated. If necessary, my specialist said that she would adjust my Enalapril dosage.

Because I had such a tough afternoon, Dad got a vanilla shake to share with me.

Dear Boo, Issac and I were distressed to hear that the rabies vaccine made you feel unwell. Mom wishes rabies law would catch up to science and that it would be unnecessary to continue to re-vaccinate for rabies every 3 years throughout a dog’s life. We hope you and your Dad enjoyed vanilla shake whatever that is. Feel better soon! Leo

Poor Boo! I was actually shocked that your vets decided to vaccinate a dog of your advanced age. There is zero chance that you did not have adequate antibodies at this point without boostering… even if you had any access to wild animals.
